That's funny you say that, cause I appreciate it less and less over the years. Still an excellent film. I just don't really like any of the characters. Much more complex story though.

Agreed. I don't think American Beauty has held up very well. It comes across as a movie that isn't as clever as it wants to be. Possibly it seemed more poignant to a younger me,but it now seems a bit trite.

I do not understand why you have to say one movie is bad in order to like another movie.

I like both films tbh. I would say MCD should've won an Oscar instead of the "gimme' they gave instead to Michael Caineidk shrugs

I've seen American Beauty twice and I have to agree. I don't feel as strongly about it, but I don't like it. There's no way it should have beaten TGM.
American Beauty was more of an Oscar type movie though, so it was always gonna win.

Incorrect, American Beauty was unconventional and broke down the barriers for dark comedies with the Academy. Green Mile was the far more safe, prototypical Oscar-bait film with its noble white saviour themes.

Exactly who in the movie is a "white saviour"?

My favorite movie of all time is
                    The Green Mile
                    , but I know that
                    American Beauty
                    clearly deserves the 1999 Oscar.
You don't know a thing about movies, if you say that
                    American Beauty
                    is a bad movie.

American Beauty is one of the most pretentious, ham-fisted, self-important, meaningless movie i have every seen. The Green Mile had heart. Just like Shawshank Redemption (which is vastly better than American Beauty) was about Hope and Resonance of the Human Spirit. American Beauty was about a 50 Something Pedophile, an Air Head Wife, Brain Dead Teenagers and a Homophobic Neighbor and Stupid Scene with a Plastic Bag. It's one of those movies that any meaning comes clearly from the viewer's own imagination and not from what is actually on the screen. Frankly all the other Oscar nominated movie that year were vastly better. Not to mention if you look at anyone list of worst Oscar winners. American Beauty is on almost every one of them.

Not to mention that the green mile is only the second in a poll of movie that should have won the Oscar.

Very well said! The Green Mile is clearly the better movie (imo). I've watched American Beauty several times and scratch my head on how it was even nominated. Again, well said!

I could not possibly agree with the OP more. This is a GREAT MOVIE. Where as American Beauty is trying so hard to be a great movie that it just comes of as silly and pretentious. Like the guy is having a mid life crisis so he's sees the beauty in life. That's been done. But the Green Mile, there was really nothing like it.

I totally agree! Jason Biggs is one of the greatest actors of his generation, but nowhere near Tom Hanks

Frankly American Beauty was just self important pretentious drivel. The Fact anyone think it was worthy of an Oscar is mind boggling.

American Beauty has probably stood the test of time better than the Green Mile.

I think it is unusually interesting that what Michael Clarke Duncan tells Paul (Tom Hanks) is true for "American Beauty's" as much as "The Green Mile":
"He kill them wi' their love. Wi' their love fo' each other. That's how it is, every day, all over the world."
"That's the beauty of argument, Joeyif you argue correctly, you are never wrong"

Both are only been around for 14 years. Lets wait 50 years before we talk about standing the test of Time. What is perceived to be relevant today might not be in 50 years time. Frankly I find American Beauty to a lot more irritating and overly important even when it first came out. I don't see it as a masterpiece of any kind. Its just a hodge podge of PC B.S.. A lot people talk about how 2001 has lasted the test of time. But most of the time people just debate about how overrated it is.
