Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Saving Private Ryan

I'm searching about the topic for the scene when Wade was killed, the soldier that Miller and Upham let escape. Nobody notice it, or maybe the topic was deleted. I've search it to myself and luckily I found it and it's Joerg Stadler was the actor as Steamboat Willie.
Now, I need the confirmation about the scene when Private Mellish died by the enemy soldier was the same person that Upham and Miller let's escape when Wade's died? And that was the reason why that soldier let Upham unharmed when he leave the scene. And that's why Upham killed it when that solider says he's name.
So I think it was the same person right? I didn't remember his face so I'm a bit confused.

From the FAQ section of this movie here on IMDb (
      http://www.imdb.com/board/10120815/faq
      😞
Is 'Steamboat Willie' the one who has the bayonet fight with Mellish?
No! This is an extremely common misconception. The soldier who has the melee fight with Mellish in the upstairs part of the restaurant is not Steamboat Willie, although they do look similar. What actually happened is that the Bayonet Soldier was another soldier entirely who gets in a fight with Mellish and wins. When leaving the room, Bayonet Soldier sees Upham, frozen with fear and sobbing. Upham even takes his hand off his rifle to show he was of no threat. The Bayonet Soldier decides to spare Upham as he posed no threat and it wasn't necessary to kill him. Later on we see Steamboat Willie in the same battle where he shoots Miller. This was witnessed by Upham, so Upham finally gained the will to pull the trigger on Willie while he was unarmed and surrendered. Mirroring the earlier scene in which he defended a captured Willie against execution by Miller's squad.
