Ferris Bueller's Day Off or The Breakfast Club?
This is a hard one for me because both films suffer from a tired final act. They both have fine moments of humor and even a few good dramatic ones. Ferris has more energy and features more cars, a more charismatic leading man and a better looking girl.
But let's not overlook the fine acting of the guy who plays the hood in The Breakfast Club. His is arguably the best performance in the film.
Could either film be made today? Not a chance.
A mddern Breakfast Club would be consumed with racial diversity instead of diverse personalities and backgrounds and be too afraid to say anything that could be construed as offensive.
Ferris is too white, too. But, to be fair, I do recall some black people in the film. They were, of course, dancing and singing. So, a modern Ferris just would not work.
The biggest problem with Ferris Bueller is it doesn't know when or really how to end.
The Breakfast Club ends with a neatly tied up bow where the kids all end up being BFF's, which is just too convenient.
However, I have to give them a score.
The Breakfast Club I give an 8/10. It looked for a while there to be a great film, a 10/10, but then they had to get all ultra serious. Such a tonal shift in a film like this just doesn't work for me.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off gets a 8.25/10. The ending is interminable but up to that point it's a lot of good silly fun, minus a few out of place dramatic scenes.
The winner is Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Next I will compare Ferris Bueller's Day Off to another 'classic' teen film, which I have not yet chosen, in pursuit of the best teen angst film ever made.

      I would go with Ferris.
My 2 favorites from that time are "Say Anything" (I love Lloyd Dobler).
      and
"Some Kind of Wonderful." (I love Keith!) He was brilliant in Mask although not quite as attractive 😜 as in SKOW. And that kiss between him and Watts!!!! Wow!

Well, damn me to watching The Rachel Maddow Show every day for life for saying this but I have never seen Say Anything or Some Kind of Wonderful. But I did pick up a three pack at Walmart the other day that includes Ferris Bueller's Day off, Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful. The latter two I have not yet watched.

I think Ferris Bueller's Day Off is far superior to The Breakfast Club. I found TBC depressing and self indulgent. I did not enjoy that film at all. I did however enjoy FBDO so much that I had repeat views and still enjoy it every single time as much as the first.
One of my favorite teenage angst films is Sixteen Candles. I love that film! "Whasa happenin Hot Stuff!" lol
Ooooh, you wicked, wicked monkey! Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire

Sixteen Candles is the funniest 80s teen comedy I have seen and it benefits from not dragging out the ending too much. It was short and kinda sweet.

I like both Ferris Bueller's day off & the breakfast club. Hard to say which is better, since they're so different. Breakfast club I would say a more superior movie in regards being taken serious. Ferris is the type of movie you could just watch anytime. Some Kind of Wonderful is great too.
Could either film be made today? Not a chance.
Ferris probably could be remade today, with minimal changes. Yes Ferris BFF Cameron would probably be black, but so what? If it comes off real I could careless.
Breakfast club on the otherhand I agree the diversity would probably not come off real, since they would probably try to squeeze in as many things as possible, and then change some of the story to be around that. For example one of them would be gay, and that would be their struggle and why they're at Saturday school, because he was probably being bullied.

Ferris. TBC is terribly overrated. Ferris is a great movie.

I own and love both movies but I'm a bigger Breakfast Club fan. The ending of TBC is great because you really don't know if they stay friends. I agree with you that Hollywood today would be focused so much on having a checklist of diversity instead of hiring 5 talented young actors that just had great chemistry together.
