The terrorists are doing it cause they want the U.S. to release a leader of theres, but surely not every American member of the terrorist group lives in New York. If they all do, why?

What I mean is, why did all the attacks happen in New York? Wouldn't there be more terrorists around the country who believe in the same cause, then just New York?

New York is like a magnet to them because they see NY as the financial center of the US and they want to destroy it.
One company had set up back up facilities in New Jersey complete with telephones, work stations and backed up computer files for companies who hire their services. Some companies were back in action after 9-11 due to this advanced planning.
That was a fall back plan because after the first bombing at the World Trade Center they knew the terrorists would be back sooner or later.

New York City is the capital of our nation's economy. Terrorists saw the city as a symbol of our economy which funds money that could lead to instability and chaos in the other side of the world. We sold weapons and gave money to other nations that terrorists view it as a unjustified intrusion of other nations' internal affairs. Al-Qaeda chose the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on February 26, 1993, and on September 11, 2001, for that reason and sought to attack the very theme that embodied our society.

Media center of the world. Terrorism feeds off publicity.
