I know Chuck's lover was just married and now had a baby daughter, so that had to have hurt his feelings, especially since she was the woman he always loved.

I think you didn't watch the entire film. He went to see her, and she explained everything to him. She helped the search crew for him for years until other people gave up hope looking for him, but she said that in her heart, she felt that he was still alive. She did move on with her life, and eventually so did Chuck. In my opinion, it shows that their love kept them connected somehow.

Yeah, it sucks. But it was 4+ years and he was presumed dead.
Part of what makes the movie work is that it's brutally realistic in how being missing for several years can drastically impact your way of life back "home".
People eventually move on. For better or for worse, that's life.
I think the end message of this film is a positive one, though. -

Actually the movie really is about a guy trying to survive on a deserted island with nobody to talk to so he bonded with a volleyball. Yeah…sad. Although wonderful directed and acted by the entire cast.
