U.S. equities tumbled for a second session amid heavy volatility that pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly below the 27,000 level.

On Monday, United Airlines withdrew its 2020 financial forecast citing a drastic drop in business to Asia.
"As a result of COVID-19, we are currently seeing an approximately 100 percent decline in near-term demand to China and an approximately 75 percent decline in near-term demand on the rest of our trans-Pacific routes…"
The selling on Tuesday follows Monday's drop which was the steepest decline for equities in two years
As money flowed out of stocks, investors bought U.S. Treasurys. The yield on the 10-year note closed down 4.9 basis points at a record low 1.328 percent, a sign of a flight to safety.
CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK INTENSIFIES RECESSION WORRIES
The equity selling follows Monday's rout as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 fell more than 3 percent to their biggest losses in two years while the Nasdaq endured its largest decline since December 2018.
Updated figures from the World Health Organization show the coronavirus has infected 79,331 people worldwide while killing 2,618.
Looking at stocks, drugmakers working on treatments for the coronavirus, including Gilead Sciences and Novavax continued to gain ground while airlines and cruise operators recouped some of their losses.
Meanwhile, United Airlines suspended its full-year guidance due to uncertainty caused by the coronavirus.

On the earnings front, Home Depot reported better-than-expected top- and bottom-line results and hiked its dividend by 10 percent.
Macy’s fourth-quarter profit fell 54 percent year over year, but its fourth-quarter earnings and sales exceeded estimates.
Elsewhere, Shake Shack posted a fourth-quarter loss of $2.1 million, or 6 cents a share, as same-store sales slid 3.6 percent year over year.
Tupperware Brands was under pressure after warning on its 2019 profit and announcing an investigation into its accounting practices.

Fox News contributor Steve Hayes said on “Outnumbered Overtime” on Tuesday that self-described democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who has been surging in the national polls and has won two consecutive early voting contests, has defended authoritarian regimes “pretty consistently now for the past four decades.”
Hayes, the editor and CEO of The Dispatch, was reacting to Rep. Donna Shalala, R-Fla., denouncing Sanders’ recent remarks praising former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
“He hasn’t been down here [Florida] to talk to residents to understand how our community, not just the Cuban community, but the Venezuelan community, the Nicaraguan community, feel about socialism and about communism,” Shalala said.
Shalala added that Sanders had "made more than a mistake, it’s what he believes and it’s unacceptable to our community.”

“He says ‘truth is the truth,’ and then said he’s not a defender of authoritarian regimes, he instead condemns them," Hayes said. "That’s just not true, he defends authoritarians pretty consistently.”
Hayes added that he believes Sanders is trying to “repackage himself as a sort of ‘socialist lite,’ if you will.”

“I mean he calls himself a democratic socialist,” he went on to say. “ … The guy has been a socialist for a long time. He’s made little bones about it."

Hayes noted that because Sanders is so far to the left, “it makes it very easy for voters to understand where he is.”

This was smack in the middle of the federal sentencing guidelines’ range — 37 to 46 months — that Attorney General Bill Barr’s Justice Department argued would be a reasonable term. The AG’s position was a second-guess of the Stone trial’s prosecutors. That team, dominated by Mueller fabulists who portrayed the Stone case as Watergate revisited, had recommended something closer to a nine-year sentence.

The severity of the trial team’s recommendation was objectively absurd. It was, more to the point, merely a recommendation — as was Barr’s milder but still stiff counter. It had no legally binding effect whatsoever on the judge. In federal law, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, the judge decides the sentence.
Not only is the sentencing court free to ignore any recommendation from prosecutors, which judges do with frequency; the court is free to ignore the guidelines — the regime Congress introduced in the 1980s in a (moderately successful) effort to end obscene disparities in sentences imposed on similarly situated defendants.

"The View" co-host Meghan McCain seemed frustrated on Thursday as Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., told her that he would support President Trump granting a pardon to political strategist Roger Stone.
"Oh, come on, congressman! Come on. Come on. He's the swampiest swamp creature," she said. Gaetz defended his position, arguing that former presidents Obama and Clinton both pardoned many more people than Trump.
Their conversation came just before news surfaced that Stone was sentenced to 40 months in prison, following his conviction last year.
"When we designed our Constitution, there were vestiges of the British monarchy that Americans still had some reverence for," Gaetz said, "and one was the notion that the executive, that the sovereign could extend unlimited grace …"

Gaetz added that he thought Stone should be pardoned "if, for no other reason, that there has been a double standard in this country where people like Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, Andrew McCabe, [James] Clapper, [John] Brennan have not faced consequences."
Gaetz referred to prominent intelligence and FBI officials, who all have been consistently criticized by the president and Republicans for their roles in the Russia investigation. None has been indicted or charged.
Gaetz hasn't exactly been welcomed with open arms on "The View." In October, McCain blasted Gaetz for taking part in a sit-in with other House Republicans during the impeachment inquiry against Trump.

Stone's sentencing came after Attorney General William Barr took the controversial step of revising the original sentencing recommendation for Stone. U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Stone’s crimes demanded a significant time behind bars, but she said the seven to nine years originally recommended by the Justice Department were excessive.

Stone’s lawyers had asked for a sentence of probation, citing his age of 67 years, his health and his lack of criminal history.
Stone was convicted in November on all seven counts of an indictment that accused him of lying to Congress, tampering with a witness and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to tip the 2016 election.

Sanders, who is on the heels of a big win in the Nevada caucuses, took to Twitter on Sunday to voice his concern about the influential lobby. The Vermont senator vowed that if elected president he would work with both Israelis and Palestinians to bring peace and stability to the region.
AIPAC wasted little time to respond to the public rebuke and called his comments an ill-informed and "odious attack." The pro-Israel lobby said Sanders never attended a conference, which is "evident in the outrageous comment."
"Senator Sanders is insulting his very own colleagues and the millions of Americans who stand with Israel," the statement read. "Truly shameful."
Bolton, who declined to testify in the House's impeachment inquiry and was never subpoenaed by the Senate, has been trying to build anticipation for his forthcoming book.
He's taken aim at Sanders, the Democratic front-runner, for his past comments about support for communist Cuban leader Fidel Castro's literacy programs. Sanders defended them recently on an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes."

Bob Chapek, who served as the chairman of Disney Parks, will assume Iger's role as CEO.

From 2007 to 2010, the Chavez regime seized majority control of four massive oil projects and American-owned oil rigs, and implemented a new tax on oil production, among other measures.
"Chavez won four national elections in a row," said Baier in the Fox Nation piece, "But when oil prices fell, the flaws of what was now called Chavismo were starkly revealed."

"What happens is that concentrated power and coercion that is a necessary part of socialism will distort the economy and then breed the need for more power for the government in the future to try to correct the inefficiencies that they've created in the past," argued American Enterprise Institute scholar Mark Perry.
"Once the government starts to take over the economy, and uses force and coercion and creates distortions that breed future government interventions to correct their past mistakes, and then you're down the road to serfdom," said Perry.

Chavez died in 2013 and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, a former bus driver, doubled down on Chavismo.
In 2018, 80 percent of the country was living below the poverty line and the annual rate of inflation reached 1 million percent, rendering the wealth of most Venezulan's nearly worthless.
A study published by the United Nations on Sunday found that one of out every three people in Venezuela is unable to secure enough food to meet their daily basic dietary requirements.

The assessment, conducted by the U.N.'s World Food Programme, found that 9.3 million people are "food insecure." Seventy percent of Venezuelans said that while food is available, they cannot afford it.
"The economy imploded and the country has collapsed to the point that it is generating more refugees now than the Middle East, than Syria," said Niall Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.

In fact, in the last three years, 15 percent of the population of Venezuela has fled the country.

Five Italian hikers were rescued from the remote Alaskan wilderness over the weekend after they visited an abandoned bus featured in the popular book and film “Into the Wild.”
Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain told The Associated Press that the hikers were found 13 miles from the beginning of Stampede Trail, where the bus, which has been the source of multiple rescues and several deaths, is located.

A satellite-based emergency device notified the International Emergency Response Coordination Center of a medical emergency and they notified rescuers, who reached the site by snowmobile, DeSpain said.
One of the hikers was found suffering from frostbite to his feet. He was taken to a hospital in Fairbanks for treatment. The remaining hikers, who were picked up by friends, had non-life-threating injuries.

Saturday’s rescue was the latest involving the bus, first made famous by Jon Krakauer’s book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn’s 2007 film of the same name. Both fueled a lingering mystique about a young idealist, Christopher McCandless, who met his death from starvation in the bus, which is about 10 miles north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve.
In July, a 24-year-old woman from Belarus died after troopers said she was swept away by a strong current while crossing a river to reach the bus. She had been married for less than a month at the time fo her death.
In 2013, three German hikers trying to reach the bus were rescued after a river they crossed became impassable because of high, fast-moving water.

Families of some of those who died are now behind a proposal before Denali Borough for a feasibility study for the construction of a footbridge over the Teklanika.
The idea is in the early stages, and no decision has been made. But borough Mayor Clay Walker said there are several concerns among officials. A footbridge might give people a false sense of security. It could lead to more people trying to reach the bus, and that could lead to more rescues, Walker said.

A letter signed by community leaders, people of color and the loved ones of those killed by New York City police officers urged voters not to support Mike Bloomberg during next month's Super Tuesday elections.
The open letter, dated Monday, comes as the former New York mayor faces mounting criticism for controversial practices like stop and frisk, which negatively impacted many residents of color, and a spike in economic inequality across New York over the 12 years he led America's largest city.
"We lived under the Bloomberg administration," the letter states. "His governing record in New York – a period that lasted 12 years, because he used his wealth and influence to change the law and give himself an additional term – was abysmal and destructive."

The letter goes on to list various policies under Bloomberg, including stop and frisk, the surveillance of Muslim communities in the city, an uptick in arrests for marijuana possession that critics say targeted young people of color, even though whites use the drug at equal or higher rates, and the closing of schools in low-income neighborhoods.
“As more voters of color begin to have their say in the Democratic presidential primaries, we hope that you’ll heed our advice: stay away from Mike Bloomberg," the letter said. "After four years of Trump, the last thing our country needs is someone who will champion racist and discriminatory policies, exacerbate economic inequality, and undermine democracy with his wealth.”
The Bloomberg campaign did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment on the letter.
