I don't know why everyone is mostly quite critical of this film. The reviews here are very cynical in tone.
If you liked "the Gift", my estimation is that you would like this film.
I'm reading the book right now and it is quite different. The book is a very thrilling read, compared to a Steven King novel by the reviewer on the book jacket.
The film was touching and suspensefula rare combination, indeed. -

This is just me, and no offence meant

Wait until you finish reading the book, and then re-watch the film. I read the book several times and could barely sit through the movie. The book goes into much deeper into the battle between good and evil, introduces the Sekmet Stone and the Isis Amulet, and elaborates on the relationship between Maggie and Cody, as well as discusses a number of other things. The movie does none of these. Granted, it's a little hard to do in a 2 hour flick, but by choosing a theme and developing that, would have considerably improved the movie. It was just all over the place and way too clichd.
The acting, I have to admit, borders on the comical. There were some suspenseful parts, but it seemed to me that the producers wanted to do so much, that instead of focusing . They wanted to created another, oh I do not know, Rosemary Baby? Something that would shock and thrill and make people think, and I truly believe that the movie fails in that respect. The book, on the other hand, at least in my humble opinion, does not. It is entertaining at the least. The movie just made me cringe.
I'd really be curious to hear if your opinion changes after reading the book.

I didn't read the book but I thought the movie was creepy and though not the best,I found it interesting.I like Omen type movies, anything involving a good vs evil theme, especially in the supernatural reign.Rufus was chillingly evil in this and Dahnya was very freaky.Kim has a very soft, feminine side but the girl was just average. Her real mother the drug addict was very convincing and I see her career is still going strong.I was totally disgusted by the low life sadistic freaks that followed they're evil leader, with no mercy.

The only part that i liked was angela bettis (the mother) and the scene with the rats. The rest was pretty bad. Kim Basinger can act, but not in this.
