Awful film.

Kevin Bacon did his best, but he was fighting a losing battle. The script was insanely poor. The film looked cheaply made. It was completely devoid of atmosphere. I normally wouldn't bother saying this, but I was shocked to read only glowing reviews on here.

There is a difference between a film being cheap and looking cheap. A good film can override these apparent obstacles with good scripting and performances. This film failed to do so. The script was cliched and the dialogue was utterly pathetic and I would question the intelligence of anyone unable to see that glaringly obvious fact.

I find the film watchable, but it just doesn't jell for me.
The 'all-knowing' little kid character was annoying and poorly handled, IMHO.
Some of the dialogue/attitudes portrayed are somewhathmmmmcartoonish (?) and a bit ham-fisted.
Editing off in places.
Too bad they couldn't do better with Matheson's material.
But, as I said, I find it watchable.
And, it has a cool jump scare and the 'theater' scenes are done wickedly well ~

I disagree, the movie is one of my favourites. It's shot well and the acting is great. It's a simple plot and gets me freaked every time I watch it. Not to mention Newton Howard's score is bloody haunting and freaks me out.
Compared to crappy Hollywood movies these days, echoes rules so hard. -

The Sixth Sense meets Close Encounters of the Third Kind meets every other genre cliche in the book.
Never defend crap with 'It's just a movie'

It's not a badly made film, it's just pretty dated at this point. The clothes, the music, the pacing, the camera work, etc is all very 90s. It reminds you what decade it was made in during just about every scene. I've seen much worse horror movies of course, but considering how good the source material is this should have been better, yeah.
Even the acting from Kevin Bacon, which I see getting a lot of accolades on this board, seemed pretty pedestrian to me. Most of the actors seem to just be sleepwalking through their roles, and the colors of the film seem to be made ugly on purpose for some reason. The movie isn't a gory/grimey type horror movie, so that was a weird choice I thought. -

Nothing about this movie screams 90s, it looks like it could have come out in 2005.
A super 90s movie would be Scream.
