Chantal is Italian in the film. She talks about her family moving to Puerto Rico from Europe when she was 11, and that's around the time she met her husband Henry. Henry and Chantal speak to each other in Italian at the beginning of the film.

Her relatives by marriage are Puerto Rican. Chantal's sister, Maria, married Paco and so their children would be Puerto Rican.
ingram33 is correct. Italy isn't mentioned, just Europe (I think), but as Chantal speaks Italian to Henry, you can conclude she is Italian.
The question remains, why did her father move his family from Italy to Puerto Rico ? What business was he in to cause him to engage Henry as his tax lawyer ?
I guess the background information dries up there. Or did I miss that.

"Incidentally "Chantal" is a French first name and is absolutely not, as far as I know, used in Italy."
This is such a strange comment to me. You can say with confidence that in ALL of Italy there is not one single person named Chantal? Weird. Cuz like, France and Italy are neighbors and how in the world someone could make such a statement regardless is so.. weird.
But I understand that the original movie was French, so this might just be a case of them not changing the names (for whatever reason.)
