I don't think it's helpful to discuss which suggested movies are good or bad The OP asked for epic films, and our tastes will differ.
    So I'd agree on
    Ben-Hur
, for the sea battle and chariot race scenes, if nothing else.
Also, you might enjoy some foreign films such as Kurosawa's
    Ran
(a retelling of King Lear) and
    Jodhaa Akbar
    from India.
    The War of the Arrows
    from Korea is epic too.

I was liking "The Last Samurai" until that cheesy ending. Cruise's character needed to die.

It's evident I'm in the minority here and maybe I need to re-watch Gladiator again. But I've tried watching it on 2 different occasions and both times I'm unable to see what everyone else saw in this movie. In my opinion, it was not the best movie of the year it was released. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was much better. Crowe was certainly not the best actor that year (or any year for that matter). When will the movie industry, in my opinion, realize this man cannot act?? I guess the academy just didn't want Hanks to win for Cast Away, for whatever reason.

Dude, when I read your title I was like, "Old?" But I guess 22 years and 17 years would be old to some people.

Old epic???? My favorite epic about a gladiator is 'Spartacus' (1960) with Kirk Douglas in the title role. For me it is superior to 'Gladiator' especially because I am not overfond of the CGI that is so prominent in 'Gladiator' even though it is a good movie.
I could be a morning person if morning happened at noon.

When people say "old epics" I tend to think of things along the lines of The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, or Cleopatra. Some of those can suffer from obvious soundstage work, though.

"Old" is so relative. "Old" epics would include Quo Vadis (1913) and Intolerence (1916) and Ben-Hur (1925). See those and see what you think.
