and the only people who like and defend this movie are scientologists. talk about being brainwashed! the fact that the "church" of scientology can convince ANYONE that this pile of crap is a good movie should be evidence enough that they are a dangerous cult!

Yeah, because Americans know the rest of the world is SO tolerant of us. I am not saying that we don't have some real winners stateside but; believe it or not, America does have some smart people living here who develop opinions that aren't fed to them from some source other than their own mind.
That being said, while movies are an artform and, as such, open to multiple interpretations; there comes a time when no amount of hiding gets you away from certain facts. Battlefield: Earth was crap in the first degree. It was crap begat of crap in the crap movie gene pool. Why? Everyone else on here has already said. It had poor acting, poor writing, poor direction, etc. If I knew offhand what a "grip" did, then I'd say they were bad, too. Simply put, Hollywood cranked this out in the hopes that name-recognition would be the sole driving force to make their money back. They didn't. No one involved in this film walked away smiling. Do you really need any more reason as to why this movie is considered one of the worst of all-time?
While I hated this film, more power to anyone who enjoyed it. I am not saying I wouldn't eye the person cautiously that did, but it is their right. After all, I hear Howard the Duck has quite the following -

Scientology has NEVER had a good reputation anywhere, so your case that the film is hated by Americans through its connection to Scientology is moot.
The key thing to remember here is that this was released before the movie industry began to worry about the Internet causing box office damage. In other words, it was safe to slowly release the film internationally over a period of say 6 months.
What actually happened to Battlefield was that, the studio thought that it was going to be a MASSIVE box office hit, on the scale of Star Wars. So they sent it to Warner Bros. to give it a wide release in the US. However the film immediately bombed and savaged by both audiences and critics as one of the worst films in history before it was released outside the US. To reduce the impact of the films financial failure, Warner Bros. had to cut back on the number of screenings This also meant cutting down the films international buzz. The result was that the film has much more notoriety in the US, then anywhere else. -

I'm an American. My country's Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. I don't care what religion Mr. Travolta practices.
I do care that he produced and starred in a film that is full of plot holes, bad dialogue, and characters that do things that don't make any sense.
The best science fiction movies, indeed, the best movies, period, have no plot holes, good dialogue, and characters that do things for reasons that the audience will understand.
Battlefield Earth is, by any standard, a rotten movie.

Mr. Ebert is a prominent American critic who has won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. He can explain far more eloquently than I can why Battlefield Earth is a steaming pile of excrement.

..Wrong - Im danish. My city unfortunately is the site for Scientologys european headqurters, so maybe the logic just is that everyone confronted with Scientology (and common sense still intact) knows, and hates Scientology for being the dangerous, brainwashiing cult that it is.
As for the movie, if you focus on the relation to scientology or not, it is really bad, and a waste of time.

I had not heard of Scientology when I first saw this movie and I still found it awful. The widespread dislike for this movie has nothing to do with religion or nationalities, it's just a poorly made movie.

I can agree that parts of America has some very funny views.
But that's not the reason this movie has recieved negative criticism.
It's poorly acted, visually revolting and the plot is just plain stupid.
Go watch the Nostalgia critic's take on it if you want it torn to pieces in more detail.
Also, stop sullying the reputation of our country, you trolling prick.

Get real. Battlefield Earth is a horrible movie and it deserved all the razzies it got. I saw this movie when it came out back in the day, and i knew nothing about scientology, hell i didint even have an internet connection untill several years later. Its not only americans that disslike/hate this movie, every logical and rational thinking person sees what this is, a money grab. And if you know the story Franchise Pictures were sued for fraud for this film and had to pay 121,7$ and went into bankruptcy. I hate/disslike this movie for the same reasons as any other person. And i am not american, i am scandinavian like you.

No! This movie sucks no matter what country you come from. I mean this movie is a bad, terrible, horrible mess that I saw once and am trying to forget. The acting was bad, the story was bad. You have to be stupid to believe that primitive people would learn how to fly AV-8 Harriers in such a short time. This movie is bad on so many levels it's pitiful. You can't blame people not liking it on where they're from. I suppose that if this movie were made in 1842 it would be lauded for it's special effects but it was made in 2000 and it sucks!

Oh shove it up your ass. Some of Scientology's biggest opponents are in GERMANY, idiot. Lots of other countries don't even recognize it, and it has been refused religious status in a lot of those countries.
And I guess you don't notice your own hypocrisy, where you are being hateful towards Americans for not agreeing with your opinion. So Americans are bad because they don't agree with your opinions, but you are good because you don't agree with Americans' opinions. You're so logical!
Here is a question, how many people outside of the US have seen this movie? Maybe six people! And if you have to say you are not a racist, you probably are.
And I would rather have people who are "strong criticizers" than milquetoasts that will just accept any horrible crap they are given. It means they are smart enough to have critical faculties.
And what are these "hollow arguments?" Things like, they abuse dutch angles? The aliens are functionally retarded? The plot makes no sense? The awful dialogue? THE PLANES? For somebody who cannot even defend the movie except by "strongly criticizing" the people who don't like it, you sure are quick to say other people's criticisms don't count. -
