      To me it seemed like Gretchen would say something to spoil the mood each time, but she didn't notice she was doing it so she thought it was his problem and not hers.

        No, Gretchen kept spoiling the mood by saying something too medical. Her IQ was loads higher than everyone elses in the program and I don't think she realized she was making guys uncomfortable both with her sexual aggressiveness and her verbal intellectual diarrhea.
