Where did it all go wrong?

I agree, to me it's simple. Resident Evil 4, as fantastic as it was, is to blame. I knew when I played it, and I did enjoy it but I said,"uh oh." RE 1-3 is great, I loved CvX, even though it used to own me until I learnedthe knife is your friend and one bad mo-fo. (The knife in Code Veronica is sickI used to always run out of ammo).
After RE4, they all copied that formula and we got the path we are on now. -

4 Resident Evil is a decent to good game on it's ownbut it is a
terrible
Resident Evil title. It is a mighty shame that it started the downfall of the series.

It all started to go wrong with RE4. It may have been a good game in its own right, but it wasn't a Resident Evil game. It ditched all the elements that made it survival horror and great in the first place in favour of it becoming virtually a straight out shooter complete with a shed load of ammo and healing littered everywhere. This of course followed on with RE5 and RE6 that essentially followed the same path.

What I loved about the first three is how clever they were designed. Some of the puzzles were truly challenging. There wasnt a lot of wasted space in the games. Almost every room had a purpose and a task you needed to complete there in order to advance the game. It really created an immersive gaming experience. You spent a lot of time running around but there was always a purpose to it. There was always a key you needed to find, a puzzle you needed to solve, etc. so it held your interest. Compare that to something like The Last of Us where you spend a lot of your time just running around with no other purpose than to get to the next set of bad guys. That gets boring no matter how great the graphics might be.
Sadly there havent been many horror/survival games in recent years (that Ive played at least) that can touch the first three Resident Evils in terms of overall plot, layout, puzzles, etc. Dead Space came close though.

I agree with most posters here are saying. I believe the problem started with Resident Evil 4. It wasn't a bad game, nor was 5 in my opinion, but it just didn't seem like your traditional Resident Evil game. Some things DID disappoint me. Such as the end of Umbrella, the gameplay where the camera moves with the character (I get motion sickness), there are no zombies, a religious cult is behind the biohazard this time, and it wasn't as scary as the PS1-era Resident Evils. It did have the same graphics as Remake and 0, but the camera moving thing wasn't right.
After Resident Evil 4, I believe the game series got worse, not better. 5 was OK with me, but again, it wasn't your traditional Resident Evil game; every Resident Evil game as of Resident Evil 6 and on was a disappointment because of you have to move the camera manually instead of it following you automatically. I didn't care too much for the camera moving either, but having to control it along with the play character is just too difficult and confusing. I liked the set camera angles from the PS1 Resident Evils. Also after Resident Evil 4, the game music wasn't all that good. My favorite Resident Evil game soundtrack was the original non-Duel Shock Director's Cut; it gave you that haunted house feel in the mansion. -

I fully agree that RE4 is where things changed. I was never that huge of a fan, and despite the general consensus I thought 5 was just as good as 4 for the most part. I hated the way Leon blocked a lot of the screen and tank controls in 3D suck way worse than in previous games.
I'm glad to see that I am not alone in missing the puzzles. They were a lot of fun and you had to use your brain a bit so it wasn't just action or horror. Really hope the new game brings more of this back.
