How did it gain such a strong cult following?

I think it's because it only showed in like 300 theaters worldwide and had almost no marketing. I didn't hear about until Netflix recommended it to me. It's a shame too because it has some the most badass, unique fight scenes I've ever seen.

I don't know stupid. If you think Emotions are stupid..Father is that you???
LOL
Jokes aside. I am actually going to recommend this movie to a friend cause she was just arguing the other day about emotions
I told her I don't watch fiction movies or read fictions books unless they deal with something exactly like this one.
You know those drama love stories and stuff. Something that makes you think(then I watch comedy and action very rarely if its someone I know who is a good martial artists in real life like Tony Jaa).
So She got very defensive cause she watched a lot of this beep movies with drama and romance.
And started to bring up catharsis and also started to say the concept is in Indian Science of .wait for itDrama(Natya Shastra which can be traslated to Drama sciences).
What I like about this movie is that it touches this aspect that I am saying but in a very wrong way.
I believe that emotions like these uncontrollable ones are our false self. The negative chakras(that even spiritual people don't know about). If you rise above into the positive chakras YOu don't feel these emotions.
But it does not mean you don't feel anything(like in this movie).
Its like this whole concept of practicing celibacy for spiritual enlightenment by Sages and Gurus.
Sex does bring you down spiritually but you don't ban. Its Love that raises you and you can "make love" which is different from sex(lets not get into that).
So while in this movie they don't even want you to feel love.
I believe that to feel love you don't need to feel jealousy, anger, frustration etc etc.(and lust either).
But who would know it hardly anyone has a risen Kundalini.(Maybe I just raised mine when I was younger I started meditating at the age of 14)
Its like the thing in the movie Lucy where she kills innocent people after she has risen above a certain level of awareness.
Even there they show it wrongly
But its like you can love someone truly but you will not be hurt when they leave you or are unable to feel that love.
So you see a lot of emotional people would just be feeding off this movie and will call it catharsis.
But I liked this movie in a very negative way. You sure can't call be a cult follower.
But I watched this movie cause I was just curious as to what reason would they give for destroying all art.
Personaly I feel that most art (especially the modern art and that art where a lady just splatter her menstrual blood all over a canvas) is just "idle mind devils workshop"
Infact Art is a manifestation of the EGO.
A person feels inferior insecure and decided to feel superior or self satisifed in doing something that no other person can do or atleast very few people can do.
Its just all to be a center of attention.
I don't think most of art and artists really are some special people I just think they are better than those people who became serial killers because of their inferiority complex and insecurities.
So you see this movie is pretty interesting. Yes I do agree you have to be a nutjob an emotional nutjob and somewhere inside you need to "FEEL"(pun intended) that there is something wrong with you you are actually crazy and then you come across this movie and it glorifies your craziness.
But you can't call them stupid. They are some emotionally deranged people who like this movie.
Actually most of us are we just dont "Feel" it. those who do watch this and become cult followers to make themselves feel better.
Its just like a guy who eats bacon everyday or a smoker just loves any articles that say bacon or Smoking is actually healthy even if is by the most stupid logic or just an outright lie.
Its just makes them feel better.
Then people like me would actually go and read that article just to debunkSame reason I watched this movie.

you are right in the sense that its because of Bale.
People who never heard of this film upon release (most of us) take a modern day interest in it because it has a huge popular star in it.
If it was Ethan Hawke or Zachari Quinto in that role, instead of Bale, i can assure you, there would be not the same amount of 'cult' following.
Its a novelty piece. Its interesting because Bale is the star, and nobody knew of it, until recent years. The film did not get a wide release, nor was it marketed, at the time. It essentially, just appeared on our radars, recently. -

Well, it always had a cult following. It's set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, and in addition, it has a strong male protagonist, so to speak (as it could would just as well with a strong female protagonist in some context). I mean, it's like how flicks like
Tank Girl
,
Johnny Mnemonic
,
They Live
,
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
and
Phantasm
have cult followings. A lot of it has to do with the specifics of the overall theme. -

Because the movie is beep awesome and is a diamond in the rough. Plus it had limited theater release. Not to mention this was Christian Bales best role AND it happened BEFORE he blew up in popularity. It's also a relaxing movie despite the numerous amount of violence in it.
A bright light can hollow the deepest of nothingness.
