Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Die Another Day

    Drevnibor — 9 years ago(April 20, 2016 11:41 AM)

I cannot possibly understand how/why is this the worst rated Bond film on this site.
Look, let us look at the whole franchise realistically Bond films are not high art.
Sure, there are good and bad films in the series, but in essence, Bond films are there to provide us with 2 hours of
ultimate male fantasy and escapist fun.
So, what makes this the worst Bond?
It seems people's main criticisms are:

    • too much bad CGI (with the surfing scene as the worst offender)
    • Madonna's song
    • invisible car
      And that's about it.
Sure, those are valid complaints, but are they really enough to make this film the worst in the series?
However, as an aforementioned ultimate male fantasy and escapist fun, this film gave us:
    • first ever battle with hovercrafts and fighting on a moving hovercraft
    • first ever duel between the super-cars
    • first time to see an undercover double agent
    • first time we've seen Bond being directly endangered by the villain's weapon of mass destruction (and being 'chased' by it!)
    • first time we've seen Bond being tortured in many gruesome ways
    • a damn good sworfight
    • a damn good title scene (minus the Madonna song)
I mean, I understand if people don't like this film, but can you honestly tell me that this is worse than
      Octopussy (1983)
      or
      Moonraker (1979)
      ?

Well personally its one of my huge favorites and while it does have its flaws. I can put on a blind eye on them and enjoy the rest of the film very much.
And i even liked Madonna's song. Its not very Bondian but at least is not boring like writing's on the wall and i liked Spectre as well.
The flaw I could understand the most is the weak script compared to Casino Royale but still no big deal to me, i see this a as great fun celebration to 40 years of Bond.
There are Bond flicks for every occasion and mood so Die Another day is great if you just want to have fun and has very nice locations even if Cuba was fake ( since the real location was Cadiz Spain).
For me die Another day is top 5 material

So nice to read a post from someone who feels EXACTLY how I have felt since DAD came out in 2002!
DAD does so many things right, and like you noted, basically has only a few "flaws", and seriously, which Bond films don't have a flaw or two, but somehow, DAD deserves being raked over the coals time and time again??
DAD is one of the best action movies and one of the most entertaining 007 movies ever made. It's big, bold and BOND 100 percent of the way! It deserves far more credit and it falls on my top 5, many times, it's my ultimate favorite #1!
            DAD rules!

I just watched the much loved "GoldenEye", and while I enjoyed it, I actually like Die Another Day better.

I'm with you and this always enters my mind when I think about the Best Bond film ever. I totally respect Goldeneye in so many ways and I do love it, but plain and simple, Die Another Day just entertains me, makes me laugh, makes me "awe" at the spectacle of it, the action, and Gustav Graves is easily top 5 best villains of all time! I even love Zao as the Henchman, he's so badass!
I think if a film truly entertains you, and you just love watching it over and over again, it's the BETTER film. Regardless on if one has a better story, or better direction, or lighting, or whatever everyone else uses to judge a "better" film.

                  DAD
feels like a film of two halves. The first half is meant to be quite dark and gritty while the second half if very sci-fi/hyper-kinetic. It's one of the most uneven Bond movies out there. It's like the

It's my least favorite Bond film overall but, upon rewatching it recently, it isn't quite as bad as I remember. Still pretty bad, but not without some redeeming qualities. I love the first half involving Bond being captured, tortured, and disavowed while emerging with longer hair and a beard then deciding to go rogue and get revenge.
It seemed like it was going to be dark and serious, with a tone similar to License to Kill. It really went downhill once they got to Iceland, with terrible CGI, invisible cars, and absurd action sequences. Still though, it had great villains and some truly memorable scenes. And Halle Berry wasn't all that bad either. I used to consider it the Batman & Robin of the series, a generalization I have since taken back. Its definitely one of the most entertaining. Hell, I'd probably rather watch DAD than Quantum of "Soulless".
It's alright, though still the worst Bond film.

It was a relatively engaging film right up until the stupid scene where Madonna showed her face. I don't even mind 'that song' either.
From that stupid sword fight and beyond it was on the whole - dreadful and so completely over the top it's unnecessary. So much did not make sense.
Bond and the protagonist had, in effect, just met. What the hell, then, was the sword fight all about about? I get that Graves might have been angry with Bond because he threw him over a waterfall, but really? Sorry, that whole scene, beyond being utterly unexciting, really gets to me! And I have a long list of gripes:
Halle Berry was so unlikable. Her delivery of her lines was painful even.
Brosnan and Berry had literally no chemistry.
The stupid snow racer thing with the parachute that shot out the back - this vehicle literally just exists to set up the single worst scene in the whole of Bond history.
The single worst scene in the whole of Bond history - the wave para-surfing mess.
The laser beam from the sky which went out of fashion in the camp 70s.
The car chase is exciting to some degree, but a lot of it was just Bond and Zao pushing buttons and Brosnan looking smarmy.
                      The shocking special effects.
                      The stupid switch blade things.
The suit that Graves wears on the plane.
The boring sword fight in the finale with the excessive shaky camera work.
The smothering of reminders that this was Bond's 40th anniversary which hasn't really gone away now as they keep rolling out the DB5 in every successive film. Yawn.
The over the top product placement which earned this film the nickname 'Buy Another Day'.
An invisible car - let's face it, it's utterly stupid.
The film is easily 30 minutes too long.
The cinematography in places really is painful - the fake grey appearance during the end of the hovercraft scene for example. It's clearly sunny and they are trying to make it look overcast and dull.
The laser fight scene which all you can hear is Halle Berry droning on in the background, bouncing from bad one liner to whining and back again.
Ugh. I really dislike this film and although it does have a couple of redeeming qualities, it's pretty much utter rubbish.
