    Fringe.
It's nothing like Six Feet Under but it has relatable characters that you come to know and love. It has five seasons, with about 22 episodes per season. It's a dark, sci fi show. Very good.

The closest series I've seen in terms of sheer quality to Six Feet Under were Battlestar Galactica and True Detective. If you want something that feels like 6FU, try Transparent, created and written by one of 6FU's best writers and considered by her to be a "sequel in spirit" to the show. It's fantastic and definitely has a similar feel.

Transparent is similar to the dysfunctional family themes and have relatable characters. I would go with that, but six feet is still the best.

              Watch it again.
I just finished a run-through for about the tenth time - I basically had it on loop for a few years after it initially ended, heh - and am still finding new depths and ways to respond to the characters. At the risk of sounding a bit wanky, I think you can only truly appreciate the growth and complexities with multiple viewings.
Ill be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Nice. It really is necessary sometimes, nothing else can quite compete! This was my first time watching the series in quite a few years, and I needed that break but it was so good going back to it. It's like visiting old friendsreally screwed up old friends, who I want to hug and strangle in equal measure, but dear friends nonetheless.

If we are talking about well-crafted story-telling, I like
                      Breaking Bad
, but it's not really similar to SFU and quite dark.
                      United States of Tara
                      is a very light drama/comedy.

                          Nothing, it's pretty overrated.
You should actually try United States of Tara though

It's hard to find a show that fills the space of SFU and there's nothing else quite like it. One thing SFU did for me was to heavily invest me in the characters..and make me not want to leave themaside from the excellent writing and acting.
                            Here's a few that might help;
                            BSG
was a good choice..although it reminds me more of
                            LOST
..(which also is a good choice if you haven't watched it. I fell in love with those characters no matter how crazy it got)
                            Breaking Bad
(if you can find a way to relate to either Walt or Jesse it's excellent)
                            Rectify
(it's not for everyone and it's a slow burn but if you're into character development it's one of the most haunting shows out there)
                            Friday Night Lights
(I hated football but loved this show..It's better than you might think even if you're not into football or teenagers)
As far as excellently written or just enjoyableand maybe investing in the characters there's these to try
                            Ray Donovan
                            The Americans
                            Fargo
                            GOT
                            Orphan Black
Kingdom (I'm not into MMA but it's a good show with interesting characters)
                            Outlander
                            Bloodlines

Bloodline (Netflix) reminds me of SFU somewhat.
No so much the storybut the family dynamic is pretty similar.
