What the heck are Vash and knives anyway; an alien or plant (as in the photosynthetic kind)? Were they made by humans or randomly discovered in space? I never could figure it out because they look/act like humans, so
PS Please give me the generic suggestion to check the manga for answeres as I have no access to it.

By all technicalities, they are in fact plants. But at the same time they are aliens. In the manga, Vash talks to one of the plants (The one on the Sand steamer). I don't know if that helps at all.

Hm the way I saw it, I thought they were 'grown' by humans (as in: genetically engineered) but the anime isn't very clear about that and I haven't read the manga so yeah .. 😛

they are a form of being known as 'plant', but no, not the photosynthetic type. there is no clear explanation for plants because humans have never been able to really understand them. all that is really known is that plants possess the power of creation, and humans were able to harness this ability to the extent that they were able to use plants to produce whatever they needed, from food to energy (though since the great fall, the scarcity of surviving engineers to operate the plants has severely limited the extent to which they can be utilized). most plants do not have a human form, they're usually seen as the core of the huge, light-bulb shaped reactors, but often take on the weird 'angel' form as they reach the limit of their power, or as the result of outside phenomena, such as knives' mass emancipation in trigun maximum. all plants share a telepathic link and seem to operate as a sort of hive mind, with the exception of 'independents' like vash and knives, as well as a number of independents from earth that are revealed near the end of the manga.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation; you've really cleared up a lot of confusion for me.

My own made up theory is that they are were created by mixing human and plant dna, through some form of laboratory created genetic mutation.
The humans in space were very advanced and already harnessing the power of the plants. However, vash and knives were "discovered" in what seems like a lab on the spaceship Rem was on. Some of the scenes show Rem protecting them from destruction.
They are human in the way they look, act and feel, but they also have the power of the plants and can communicate with them.

^ I thought the same logical conclusion, both Vash and Knives are shown in some kind of test tube experiment, which leads me to believe that they were genetically produced by probably mixing human dna with plant dna. That would explain why they neither fully plant nor human, and are considered as "monsters" by others. Also as anyone else noticed the theme of "Life" behind Trigun? It's not explained, but after viewing the anime 3 times, I started to notice the space colony called "SEEDS", the "SEEDS" implies the humans that will eventually be planted on a desolate planet, and like all plants the human population grew, just like that one episode with the two old couple that managed to grow a garden on the same desert planet. Plants seems to be their energy resource for everything in trigun, plants have life force within them, I believe this life force is also the source of power for Vash and Knives angel arms. And of course there's Vash, who's strongly believes that life is the most precious thing in existence, being both plant and human himself he's like a guardian angel overseeing human growth, while Knives could be the devil waiting for their destruction. Very interesting anime, one of my favorites for sure.

My theory is that Rem's boyfriend was on ship, was in the room where the plant was, there was some kind of accident that he died from (because of plant dunno), his DNA got mixed with the female plant, the after effects of the accident were baby Vash and Knives. Crazy.
Maybe plant bears only female children, like a holy mary?!? or is two-sex being, but this would somehow explain the male children, also their humanity side.
This is unanswered in the series, manga, but my mind subconciously somehow put this issue in that order 😄

I believe that Vash and Knives were accidental twins in the shipboard experiment. Human, plant, that really doesn't matter to me, they are simply very superior beings and it's not explained why they're so superior to humans. Twins, but one inherited nothing but goodness, the other, nothing but badness. God and Satan.
As Meryl stated, (in episode 9?) everyone who comes into contact with Vash has their life changed in a positive way, they find an emotion long lost. A god does that, while Knives is as evil as evil can be.
And.. Crazy as it sounds, Vash, the cartoon character, impacted me in a positive way as well. The show just makes you love goodness.
