I tried to watch Outlaw Star, the problem, me thinks, is I tried to watch it after I'd just finished another sci-fi space western about bounty huntersOutlaw Star can't compete with Cowboy Bebop which I had just finished before I started it.
I think, once I finish what I'm currently watching (Wolf's Rain and Guyver: The Bio Boosted Armor) I need to take an anime break. I've been watching a lot in the last couple of months. -

Yeah I am just coming off of a year break myself =P. Have you ever seen Last Exile? I forgot to mention that one! Excellent voice acting! has Johnny Yong Bosch, Crispin Freeman, Steven Jay Blum! Just a amazing series!

Last Exile is good, I agree. I think from the more recent ones I really liked I'd definitely mention Texhnolyze (although the first few episodes were so puzzling that I didn't get anything and I was in doubt whether to continue watching), Haibane Renmei, Mononoke (not the Miyazaki's film, but the unrelated strange series about spirits, it features a character from Ayakashi, and the series resulted in me the most twisted dreams ever), Ergo Proxy, Blood+
Gilgamesh and Scrapped Princess had a potential, each one in their own way, and I liked some bits of them, and characters were quite wel ldevelopped, but overally Well, they could have done a better job.
I really miss shows like 'Now and then, here and there', that had a very suprirising animation for a complex plot, I think the animation put a lot of people off the show before they even understood how serious the series was. I have not seen anything quite like it since then. The same goes for Cowboy Bebop, I am happy to find so many good elements of it in Gungrave, it gets better with each episode.
I tried to see if anything good comes out at the moment and nope, it does not seem so. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 12:21 PM)
Last Exile is really good. I was surprised when a friend of mine showed the series to me. I haven't seen any of the the series that you mentioned. I always wanted to see Gilgamesh, Ergo Proxy, and Blood +. Blood the Last Vampire was really good. Have you seen Vampire Hunter
Bloodlust?
You know I barely remember Now and then, here and there! I bought it a couple years ago, and watched it with a friend. I am glad that you like Gungrave! Brandon Heat is a great character! I love the whole thing! the ending was just powerful! Most animes endings are not that good. I am happy to say Gungrave doesn't repeat that formula! I will stop there though. Don't need to spoil anything for you
What are your thoughts on Samurai Champloo?

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 02:47 PM)
I watched Samurai Champloo after being depressed over Bebop's ending, so I was happy to see something uplifting. I think, despite some dramatic moments, I appreciate it for its humour most (I can watch the baseball episode over and over). But the characters were great as well. I have a few friends that are interested in samurais and Japanese history, and they thought the show was quite rubbish; I found it very entertaining:) Maybe because I am not overreacting when it comes to historic details.
Vampire Hunter D is my all time favourite. I also really liked the first film. I think it had a great ambience, only the animation got old, you can so tell it was done in the 80's. Bloodlust has got this 'hollywood touch' to it, nevertheless I love the story! I even read a few novels from the series, and they were fun to read as well. The novel's translator into English said that there are projects to make another movie about D, or maybe a TV-series. I really like Kawajiri's stuff in general, I hope he would work on those projects too..
I just thought of two other shows that I quite liked: Speed Grapher and Noein, with the emphasis on the second one. And above all Paranoia Agent (and as a matter of fact everything done by the director). Satoshi Kon is a genius. I just saw Inception with diCaprio and thought that Nolan borrowed so much from Paprika
Have you seen any of those?
And I can definitely recommend Texhnolyze. It is far superior to Gilgamesh, you just need to get through first few uncomprehensible episodes with hardly any dialogue before things start making sense, but it is really worth it!
Also, would you recommend Berserk? I vaguely remember reading about it ages ago, and then seeing some dodgy AMV, which put me off the show a bit
I dont think I could go on a longer break with anime. For me it became a genre like any other else, if I can watch drama, I can watch anime as well, and as long as I find interesting things to watch, I am not planning a rehab:) -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 05:21 PM)
I love Samurai Champloo! It had some very funny moments! The Baseball episode, and War of the Words where Mugen learns how to read, and write! The ending was really good to. Sad, but not Bebop sad. I am glad (SPOILERS IN NEXT SENTENCE) All of the main characters lived. Just wish they stayed together.
I feel the same way about Vampire Hunter
Bloodlust. It is really fantastic. I liked the first movie as well. The animation is sometimes hard to watch lol. I heard rumor they were going to make a series out of the books. Hope that comes true.
Paranoia Agent was pretty good. I haven't seen Paprika yet. A friend of mine told me it was good. I really want to see Inception.
Would I recommend Berserk? Are you kidding me!? Haha! Yes Berserk is a must watch. The animation is a little old looking, but it is one of the best animes out there! similar to Gungrave where you have the first episode. Then it goes into a series long flash back of how the characters got where they are today. I am pretty sure you can pick up the complete series for pretty cheap now.
Well the anime "break" that I went on wasn't that I was tired of anime. I just slipped away from it more than anything. I guess you get to that point sometimes where you say I don't think there is anything else that amazing out there. Then of course you are proven wrong lol.

I own
Paprika
Paranoia Agent
Noein
Ergo Proxy
But I haven't watched any of them yet.
I did enjoy Last Exile, Princess Monoke, and Haibane Renmei.
Some other good ones, kind of slow paced but well done, Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 09:24 PM)
Ihave seen Voices of a Distant Star before. I thought it was pretty good. I believe the same director did The Place Promised in Our Early Days. I have yet to see that one though.I think there is another one being made by that same director. Have either of you seen Shigurui: Death Frenzy? It is a Samurai anime. Very gory, and mature rated. I wasn't too thrilled with it. It really didn't have an ending like most animes.

Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5cm per Second are all by the same person. Not sure if there are others still.
I have not seen Shigurui.
Here are my brief views on a few series I've recently watched, copied from my Notes on Facebook.
Blue Drop:
Well, it wasn't quite what I expected based on the back of the case. Lot more slice-of-life drama as opposed to the sci-fi action implied. What the series did, it did well enough, but it's ending made it all feel like a prequel to an epic sci-fi war drama series that doesn't exist.
Can't say I felt my time was wasted watching it, but also can't see myself recommending this to anyone.
Saikano:
Shuji and Chise have just started dating when, during an air raid, he learns that his girlfriend is the ultimate weapon in the Japanese military's forces in the vast war being waged. It's all down hill from there.
It's about war and love and loss.
Well, that was a good series, but quite a downer. I don't think youcould make it more of a downer unless they had started killing kittens.
Tide Line Blue:
Loved it. A great mix of comedy, drama, and emotion in a post-apocalyptic waterworld. A rogue submarine commander setting out to start a world war as the UN tries to start over in this new world, with twin brothers Keel and Teen caught in the middle.
Serial Experiments Lain:
It was good, but didn't quite enjoy it as much as I feel I should have. I'm thinking I should re-watch the series when I'm in a mood that syncs up with it better. I had no idea what to expect going into it initially, so that may have hindered my immersion into it. Love the concepts it delves into though about what is real and what isn't and what the ultimate end result of the internet may be. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 17, 2010 10:33 PM)
I still need to see The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5cm per Second.
I really didn't enjoy Shigurui that much. The episodes were alright, but the begining was similar to Gungrave/Berserk. Then at the end it never told you how the characters arrived at that point. Then it didn't even tell you what happened from there. I really don't like endings like that lol.
A couple of years ago I saw a trailer for Saikano. Thought it looked interesting so I ended up buying it from animecornerstore.com. I sat down one day I was off of work, and proceeded to watch the entire thing. After it was all over I told myself never again! Man that thing was depressing lol. I think you are right the only way it could have been worse is if they killed kittensalthough by the ending I am pretty sure there are no kittens left lol.
I have Serial Experiments Lain, but have yet to watch it. I think I am going to start Requiem from the Darkness now
Have you seen Elfen Lied yet?

Elfen Lied is pretty good. Although it is very violent! The opening scene has a naked girl ripping people to pieces. So if that bothers you. You should avoid it. Really though it is a horror series. Has a pretty good story line. I enjoyed it. There are a few scenes in that series that will make you cringe though

"Pretty violent"? Elfen Lied is very violent, hehe. I actually only saw the first episode and said au revoir to the series. I now only remember the scene where the girl rips off the secretary's head and it is spinning around in the air. I dont mind violence in general, I survived 26 episodes of Gantz that is very graphic and contains not one and not two gory moments, and 100 Stories, that has just one twisted plot, so I dont know what went wrong for me with Elfen Lied that I could not watch it. I blame this spinning head.
I have seen The Place Promised in Our Early Days a few days ago, I was a bit disappointed at the ending to be fair, but the animation and the ambience were first class, and it was not as pesimistic as Voices of the Distant Star.
I have seen a first episode of Shiki which turned out to be about vampires (vampires are everywhere now!), but I hope it will get better than it was in the first episode. have you guys seen Vampire Knight? I wondered about people's opinion on it. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 18, 2010 10:55 AM)
haha! Yeah Elfen Lied is not for the faint of heart that is for sure. The story is pretty good though once you start getting into the series. Gantz was pretty decent. I started watching it the same time as a friend. He liked the begining (the comedy) I actually thought the last couple of episodes where Kei started to become more of a hero type character was the best part of the series. My friend didn't like the ending like I did.
So you liked Requiem from the Darkness then? The same friend I mentioned said he liked it, but thought they should have done 100 episodes to coincide with the 100 stories of the book the guy is writing.
I would still like to see The Place Promised in our Early Days. Voices of a Distant Star was good. I believe the director animated Voices completely by his/her self. I am not sure about TPPIOED's though
The Vampire "trend" has been stale for awhile now. (Damn you Twilight!) Oh well we still have Hellsing right? Maybe Alucard can stop the Twilight madness!

I liked Gantz. It had good characters, although once
Katou and the little dog died
, it was never the same. I think the last arch needed more than just one protagonist. I wanted to read the manga, but with 300+ chapters, nah, thanks.
I think Requiem for the Darkness is definitely not something I would like to see 100 episodes of ^_^ It is not a kind show I can say I e n j o y e d really, a few episodes proved quite disturbing, but it is an interesting oneas a whole. It has some flaws, like I never really cared for any of the characters, and the ending was kind of meh, I expected something more. I'd definitely say Ayakashi and its spioff Mononoke, which both belong to the same genre, history-spirits-horror type of, were excellent, and could do with more episodes.
Vampires are such a good topic for films/anime/books, I wonder why is it so hard to make something decent out of it. -
Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 18, 2010 05:39 PM)
I thought Gantz was good too. Hey the Dog had two of the best scenes with the girl though! lol
I haven't seen Requiem yet, but I think I can safely say that just because the main character is writing a book about 100 storiesDoesn't mean you have to have 100 episodes. Actually to me most of those long animes get lost within themselves. It is harder for me to get into them. So I agree. Although I guess I need to see it first =P
Vampires are great! However, when they make them love sick teenagers is when they go wrong. Not that is necessarily a bad thing. But it seems that is the only movies they put out. By the way Daybreakers I thought was horrible. 30 Days of Night was decent though. Hellsing has the best Vampire of all time in it! Next to D that is.
How do you make the spoilers box around the text you want to hide?

It took me a while to figure it out, but here it is:
http://www.imdb.com/help/boards/markup
Has all the useful stuff to edit the posts, including spoiler signs etc.
I just though it was so sad when the doggie died, not fair, since it could not even properly defent itself (bite a statue? ^_^ haha).
The longest series I have watched was FMA Brotherhood, with 64 eposides, and then the first FMA with 51 (and the reason why I started was that I didnt not know how long it would be). I dont like very long shows, like Bleach. Takes too much time and at one point you can not even remember how it all started. With requiem for the Darkness the problem is more that it feels not confortable enough to watch it for a long time.
Daybreakers, ugh. I thought it was ridiculous, although the idea was there. The beginning was not bad, but then, a lot of films start well, and then they turn bad. Vampire Hunter D is one show that proves how good a vampire theme can get, although I suppose if you want to make money you will replace D with a pale James Dean wannabe in an expensive car.

Thanks for the help! I just want to make sure no one's experience is ruined because the newbie doesn't know how to properly warn people about spoilers. I have had things ruined before on boards of this site. Now I just try not to go into a board until I am done watching something

I really did think it was sad when the Dog died. I am a huge dog lover! I know you didn't finish it. There was a later episode of Elfen Lied that you would have not liked that involved a puppy. I had to turn away.
I started to watch Bleach. I thought that was a decent show. I agree that sometimes they get lost within themselves when they run too long. The only long anime that I enjoy is Inu Yasha. I for some reason developed a fascination with it when I first got into anime. It just ended at almost 200 episodes, and four movies. Although I have not seen the ending of it.
So Requiem From the Darkness is disturbing then? Is it the violence, or the over all atmosphere?
Yes I was very disappointed with Daybreakers. I didn't think it was going to be a masterpiece going in. It just turned bad in a hurry. My favorite part of the whole movie was Willem Dafoe. He is a great actor. Just a horrible movie Ethan Hawk is a pretty good actor as well. I also like Sam Neil. The movie just didn't go anywhere I thought. The should make a live action Vampire Hunter D flick. The first movie you could have him kill Edward from Twilight. He could kill him in like the first 5 seconds of the moviemaybe 2 seconds hahah!

Unicorn_Blade — 15 years ago(July 20, 2010 02:50 AM)
Requiem for the Darkness was quite disturbing. Actually it gets lighter towards the end of the show, but two episodes from the middle literally made me feel sick. Also the atmosphere is very claustrophopic. And it did not help I was watching the show while having a high fever. Do not repeat my mistake
I think sometimes literal violence (like in Gantz, or Battle Royale) is easier to get over than incest, etc.
When I found out about Bleach it had already 120 episodes or so. I got DVDs from a friend with first few seasons, but then as I knew I will not get the other few dozens of them for myself, I did not even start. I dont like watching a show of which I know I will not not be able see the ending. Sometimes the characters grow on me, so id probably feel obliged to watch the whole thing.
I think the idea for the beginning of Daybreakers was not too bad, but it went horribly wrong. Like when they came up with the solution, I was like what the hell. Is that it? The whole explanation was just stupid. I thought it was a shame that with so many decent actors they just wasted an 1,5 hours of my life.
I think the problem with live action D film is the choice of the main actor. I can not see absolutely anyone who would be good in the role. But anyways, Edward Cullen would not be good enough to polish D's horse's hooves.

Force_of_Legend — 15 years ago(July 20, 2010 05:45 PM)
I had watched the first episode not too long ago. I remember the show having a very murky creepy atmosphere. Yeah incest is pretty sick!
I know what you mean about long shows like Bleach. There is one kind of long one I am very interested in seeing. Have you heard of Monster? It is about a doctor that ignores what the hospital board tells him. They tell him not to save this young boy. He does it any ways. Which leads to them firing him. Turns out the boy is a sadistic killer. So the series focuses on the Doctor seeking the boy out to "fix" his mistake.I heard Viz did the dubbing, but canceled after 16 episodesI believe there is 74 total episodes
The whole solution for Daybreakers wasn't well thought out at all. Also the "jump" scares I didn't think were that impressive.I felt cheated too!
I am still racking my brains as to who could portray D.Can't find anyoneHave you heard about the Cowboy Bebop live action movie? They have Keanu Reeves playing SpikeI think I am going to be sick. I like Keanu, but He is too old for Spike. Spike is supposed to be around 28 or so. Not in his early 40's Plus I don't think Keanu has the acting chops to fulfill the role. Spike is just a cool guy.
