Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Piano Teacher

When Erika filled her young nervous students coat pocket full of broken glass, I thought she was only doing it to mutilate the girls hand because she saw her as a rival both on the piano and with Walter, who helped her laugh and relax before her performance, but was Erika also teaching her student a lesson in relieving tension with the same self-mutilating cutting she herself practiced?

Interesting question. I'm compelled to say no as i read the book a few years ago and it was all about Walter iirc. But i also recall that Erika would feel sick and feel the urge to urinate before her own performances and i believe she engaged in self harm to alleviate these feelings, so you could be onto something. I'd still be more inclined to think it was more subconscious if it was some type of lesson rather than out and out deliberate.

I think it was an attack against her student because she hated that student and became jealous of the attention that student got from the young man.
That's why I never felt sorry for her when he raped Erika later on in the movie. It was basically her word against his cuz she'd already written that letter with details about how she wanted him to commit a sex crime against her cuz that's how she gets off
