Thank goodness Boyd's son is dead at last - now we can get back to the stories without the distraction (pretension?) of "exploring the characters' emotional dimensions".

I unfortunately fell asleep during the second part of that epi and missed what happened. I gathered that he died from last nights epi due to drugs, but what ahppened? Did we see it happen, did Boyd find him, or did he (and we) just hear it through Eve?
In the beginning I was really excited that they had brought his son back, but it never really amounted to anything and just turned out to be a bit of an exasperating aside when all I wanted was them to ether really do something with it or return to the real storyline. It was all a bit anticlimactic.

I understand what u mean, yes, it's just a story line, but that is still a sick comment if this were real life, and it was your son, would you feel the same way.. This death will only add to Boyd's character, for better or worse we'll have to wait and see

I generally don't like the personal tragedies that they tend to attribute to detectives (generally marital breakdown and alcoholism!) but I think Waking the Dead does it really well. It doesn't feel contrived or cheap, it's realistic and the way they handle it is impressive. It takes quite a bit to make me cry but when Boyd said "He's my son" and his voice cracked I was bawling. Trevor Eve gave a wonderful performance.
Part of what makes to show stand out is the realistic writing, where we have people interrupting and talking over each other, and saying things that aren't always crucial to the plot. I think the Luke storyline was realistic and added a great deal to the programme and makes the characters seem like real fully developed characters rather than just two-dimensional stereotypical police characters.

Thank God it wasn't just me who cried at the end of that episode. Trevor Eve is a fantastic actor and we are so used to Boyd interrogating people and getting angry - it was such a change seeing him break down like that. I bawled my eyes out! I was expecting him to cry but I wasn't expecting him to sob like he did - it was really moving.

I think it was Joe in the pilot but after that it was LukeI always remembered him being called Luke. Maybe they decided 'Joe' wasn't quite rightyou can't really say it in the same was as you can 'Luke'

To the OP who thinks its finally over, I imagine series 8 will see the fallout from Luke's death, and personally I can't wait. Boyd is an amazing character and seeing more depth and emotion in his already superb performances will be awesome.

Luke's story line was intended as, and was perfectly executed as, a sub-plot. It was never meant to 'distract' from the main story-lines but just shows there is something else happening in the world outside of the cold cases that are being investigated.
I thought the whole sub-plot was brilliant. It showed me yet again (not that I needed showing) just how amazing this show is and when I went back to TV after having watched it on Sky+ Eastenders was on.and that shows seems like crap to me at the best of times but following Trevor Eve's heartbreaking performance it somehow managed to fall down a few more notches that I didn't even know existed!! -

why did they change it from him having a baby son called matt to an older son (25+) called joe and then to luke. CONTINUITY lmao
Yeah, the continuity broke.
So far this Boyd's son story is the only one that me dislike Boyd in the whole show. I don't think he took care of his son well.
