Why did Mike get so obsessed about the tapes?

The first time Mike listened to a tape it was after work. As the movie goes on he is listening to them when he is supposed to be working. Did Simon make Mike so obsessed about the tapes?
Does my back hurt because I have bad posture or do I have bad posture because my back hurts? -

Plot device.
When Jeff sees Hank in the stairwell and they all split up to look for him, Mike inexplicaby says beep this' and goes to listen to Session 9. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, except that we needed to hear Session 9. -

I think because, Mike father was a lawyer and he was working on the case that involved Mary Hobbes! Mike went to pre law and should have continued (as he stated in one of scene, thinking bout going back) People like lawyers are curious!
