On the bad side, I thought the ends to Dexter and Sopranos sucked. In both those cases, I don't think we got any real closure as viewers.
See I just don't understand what was wrong with the finale of Dexter. Yeah it wasn't amazing, but it wrapped everything up. With the exception of Dexter being found out, BUT that storyline already happened in 2 and 7. Personally I think it made sense in the context of the story they were trying to tell over the 8 seasons. It wasn't amazing or anything, but it made sense and gave closure.

    • Dexter had been on a journey to become "human" and to feel real emotions. It happened. Check.
    • Dexter had throughout the series been trying to find someone who could accept who he really is. His dad couldn't accept what he was, Brian couldn't accept the life he created, Lila couldn't accept the good in Dexter, Miguel manipulated him and thought of him as a tool he could use, Lumen was almost the perfect woman, but then she left after realizing she no longer had the same urges as Dex, Deb can't accept Dex as a Killer. Hannah? Accepts everything about Dexter.
    • The entire series was building to Deb's death whether we liked it or not.
    • As for the lumberjack ending, the entire series slammed home the point that Dexter could never live normally without losing those who are innocent around him. His dad, Rita, LaGuerta, Zach, Vogel, Deb. So what better way to ensure you can never be a threat to the only two people that are still alive that he cares about? Isolation, he was DESTROYED with Deb's death, he could never forgive himself, and he couldn't bear to have it happen to him again.
Ron beep Swanson is the greatest thing that ever happened to television.

Interesting thoughts, but I doubt this was all a grand plan by the writers. I think they were just flying by the seat of their pants at this stage.
I think Dexter would have been better and tighter with fewer seasons, leading up to an end where he was hated and hunted by all.
How about this idea? Maybe the show could have ended with him caught and in prison, content in an odd way as he realised that was his natural environment. No more worries about lying or hiding or having to deal with personal relationships. Just predators and prey. It would have made for an interesting twist. Dexter realising this was where he always belonged and wanted to be without knowing it.
Edit: Could you add a spoiler warning to the start of your last post for anybody who hasn't completed Dexter? I've tried to steer clear of specifics when it comes to endings on here.

Dexter should have been five seasons long. Seasons 1,2 and four are amazing while three is just okay. Season 5 should have been like this: Deb or Quinn or whoever connect the dots with Rita's death and then eventually find out everything and then the show couldve ended with his death either by lethal injection or by Deb shooting him. Instead what we were handed was 4 mediocre and at times excruciating seasons of characters hooking up with each other, ridiculous plot holes and shotty writing, Dexter basically becoming Superman and a lame ending of Dexter surviving driving a boat into the middle of a hurricane and becoming a god damn lumberjack.
I wouldve been more enraged by the ending but thankfully the final 4 seasons had already prepared me for the let down.
Dear Warden, You were right. Salvation lies within.

I couldnt get through two seasons of dexter. I triedtwice. As for The Sopranos, Chase said after the finale that (im paraphrasing here) he didnt want a neat and tidy ending and wanted the viewers to use some insight and think for themselves. He challenged the fans. With a monster like The Sopranos that took nerve, and I think it was awesome. He later said in an interview a couple years down the road that the pieces were there for the viewer to determine the outcome of the finale. If someone wants a show or series that wraps everything up in a neat little bow for them watch Law and Order.

That's a shame about Dexter. Season three was better than two, and season four was incredible.
But after that, it's all downhill.

i really tried. All my friends that like the same series as me (the wire, deadwood, SFU, the sopranos, bb, Mad Men, G.O.T. etc etc etc) said id probably like it. My other friends who like shows i dont really care for (weeds, Californication, hung, House etc etc) also said it'd be up my alley. I couldnt even figure out why i didnt like it. I was disappointed. I wont give it a 3rd chance

I haven't yet found anything close to how good the Shield ended. As an anti-hero, Vic got the perfect ending with the purgatory he has to endure and the show even destroyed the machismo and justification he ( and we as viewers ) used to excuse his actions. I thought it was really clever stuff.
                  SPOILERS FOR BREAKING BAD/BOARDWALK EMPIRE:
Got into a debate recently with a mate who said Vic should have gone down in a hail of bullets, but I think the Shield handled it so much better and more originally than this: Boardwalk Empire and Breaking bad went down the main-character-is-a-bad-guy-and-gets-killed-at-the-end and both finales, for me, seemed cliched, unfulfilling and ultimately too simple and good an end for these characters. To emasculate and shackle in Vic the way they did in the Shield was a masterstroke in my opinion.

Agreed. Vic got what he deserved. The Shield's end left him in his personal hell for life.
