It just depends. Soccer is seen, for the most part, as sort of a kids sport. A lot of our kids play soccer (hence the term "soccer mom"). A lot of women, as you said, love soccer and a few guys as well. But here, its really all about the big 3 (NFL, NBA & MLB).

i know a lot've guys who're into soccer over here, though the love of soccer never seems to really cross paths with the baseball/basketball/football fanatics.
but when the FIFA world cup is on, people pay more attention
it's considered more of a hobby than a pastime here is the biggest difference -

The NFL bores me, theres nothing fun about watching the NBA.
Really just follow the EPL - tottenham's been making me miserable for the last several weeks. The problem is we have no competitive soccer teams. MLS is aweful by comparrison to most every league. And while the players are tremendous athletes, theyre simply not as good as Spanish/English/German/etc players.
Oh, and also we dont really have much invested in games in England/Spain/etc because theres no "home town pride" or anything like that. What do we care when Arsenal plays ManU, or Real faces Barca, it has nothing to do with us.

I hate American football with all my heart. Worst sport in the world. I much prefer real football (we call it soccer over here, as you all know). I know at least one other male on my hall who agrees with me. He's American, but he loves Manchester United.

American football, basketball, and baseball are definitely the three most popular sports to watch in America. However, soccer (or football, futbol, etc) is the most popular sport in the world, so of course there is a good amount American men (and women) who take great interest in soccer and watch it regularly. I myself (a female) watch soccer all year round.

there are American males who like futball/soccer though it is mostly a niche "die hard" fanbase and most are interested in it as a change of pace sport. if there is a World Cup or Olympics or other international competition that the US mens team is playing then they will be more willing to watch it (as well as those who root for those other countries teams), but not as much in terms of games within the US such as the Major League Soccer. If the US Mens team was more consistent in terms of winning and playing greatly, possibly having a chance of being a contender then it would be more likable among the American males. Right now, American men are more into the US Womens Soccer Team than the Mens since they're the ones winning. Of course, some of those Womens players sure are pretty like Alex Morgan and Hope Solo and that is also a part of the appeal.

Hockey is also more popular than soccer in the U.S.. Some men like soccer. Many of them are immigrants or the sons of immigrants. Some played soccer growing up. Soccer is popular as a youth sport in America. It isn't very popular as a spectator sport. But there is a professional soccer league.

This is true - today. But professional soccer is gaining on professional hockey. Soccer audiences are getting bigger and bigger every year - going from an average of 10,000 per match, to 11,000, to 12,000, and they keep on going up. And soccer is expanding into more and more markets every year.
In 10 years, soccer is going to overtake hockey in America - 2025.

It's funny, the OP was probably correct (or more correct) 6 years ago when they posted this. but when NBC started broadcasting the EPL a year ago, it seems like it's getting more and more popular. not that it's huge or anything, just more than it was 6 years ago.
