Yes, i agree. But what i don't understand is why the soldiers showed up so late? he would not have died if he'd have seen them (or at least not in that moment)

But what i don't understand is why the soldiers showed up so late?
The implication is that the soldiers were hanging back and observing the group before making contact. This would partly be common sense, and partly (given what we later find out about the soldiers, and their plans for Selena and Hannah) to size up Frank and Jim. They probably would have ended up having to kill Frank anyway; Major West tells Jim he wants to give him a chance to join them, but there's no way they'd expect Hannah's father to just stand around while she gets gang-raped.
Anyway, the soldiers make their move right after Frank gets infected and starts raging, because that's when he's become a danger to Selena and Hannah. Their main motive is to bring the women in alive and unharmed, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

I thought that too. I think had Frank not died and the group just given up and tried to leave they would have found a way to split them up so they could kidnap the women. When Frank turned he became a risk so they had to expose themselves to take him down, but I'm sure they took Jim along reluctantly.

Out of everything that happened in the movie, that was what struck me the most. Very heartbreaking scene.

Same here. Frank's death left me gutted. I actually can't watch it when I watch the movie now. It's a testament to the quality of the acting and directing that people so easily connected with the character.

Agreed. That scene was absolutely heartbreaking. If only he hadn't bothered with that crow pecking away at that dead infected person.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
