doesn't the ending make the rest of it kinda pointless?

Well, the way I (and I believe many) see it
- Rachel was spared because she made a copy of the tape and showed it to someone else (Noah). I don't know if Aidan watching Rachel's copy would have spared Rachel though.
- I think Samara giving Aidan visions is just part of that whole thing that children can communicate with ghosts because they have different brainwave patterns and connections than that of adults. They show this in many movies (the Paranormal Activity sequels, for instance).
And normally Samara giving somebody "visions" isn't a sign that she likes them. Look at her parents, the Moesko Island inhabitants, and even her own horses!

That's the all point to a scary movie, there is no relief at the end. She wasn't a sad soul asking for help, she was just a evil little half demon girl (then spirit), who enjoyed inflicting pain to others, helping her realise her body only give her strength.

We talking about strength not modus operandi, after Rachel found her body therefore helped of coming out of the well she was old by Aiden "you shouldn't have help her" meaning that now she's somehow stronger. The way she decide to kill people is trivial.

If you notice in the film Katie and Becca are wearing school clothes which means they go to church. Katie had premarital sex with Josh which breaks the rule in horror films. Samara kills Katie and kills Noah if anyone noticed.

I want to also mention that Rachel saved Aidan's life by helping him make a copy. She would not have known that making a copy saves people's lives had she not endured everything she did. She realized Samara's motives.
