Why is this considered THAT good?

I just started watching it and I love it. Because of Buffy and Angel I have always been a Joss Whedon fan but I do not like science fiction so I never watched Firefly until this year. Even though I am not into science fiction I absolutely love this show. I think Joss is so good at character development that he makes you care about the characters. That is why I love Buffy so much. Everytime I watch the series I am always sad about leaving Sunnydale at the end of season 7 so then I have to Angel afterwards. His characters draw you in and make you feel for them. It is what storytelling is all about and Joss is a master. I absolutely love this show and I am glad I gave it chance even though science fiction isn't my thing. If you have only watched a couple of episodes keep watching because it gets so much better.

Have to agree with the poster, love sci-fi but cannot get the rating. It's watchable, certainly better than average( I believe) but not 9.2. Does this involve being in love with Fillion, Torres or another to vote so high??
Anyone who still has faith in humanity has never been to the imdb boards. -

If i had to give a reason why the rating is so high, it'd probably because so many people want it continued. Its been a few years (over ten) sure, but they started the show leaving it SO open for new episodes. The show does slack in a couple episodes with the side cast, etc.. but the main cast is amazing, i mean amazing. I would love if they'd pick it back up, even now.

The show was ok and deserved more seasons, but I only rated it a 7. I think Whedon is overrated as a writer/creator and the people that do like his earlier work are very vocal. There doesn't have to be a lot of fans if they are all vocal. Most highly rated shows have a "silent majority" of people who watched it, this show has few silent fans.
I thought it was perfectly cast, but the mixing of old Westerns and modern spaceships made it too un-science fiction for me. Stories were re-hashes of a lot of Westerns, but with a space twist to it and that isn't a compliment to me.
The premise that there is a solar system with so many planets and moons in the "Goldilocks" zone is statistically impossible. Also, with technology to Terraform planets, but not to fix the problems with Earth? Unlikely. -

if someone hasn't seen it you can't really explain why, they have to try for themselves, so in that case 'IS' is good enough an answer. As for the others that want to discuss if it deserves a 9, it depends on what you like. My answer is that I love SF and this one holds together better then any other SF. It's simply the dialogues (for me)
