After a while she formed friendships and became accustomed to life aboard Serenity but why did she choose it in the first place? In Out of Gas she seemed critical of the ship when first looking at it but determined to get aboard. Malcolm asks her point blank why someone like her would choose the ship and doesn't get a straight answer.

I like to think she saw a good business opportunity. She knew she could haggle for a lower rent just because she was a companion.
      You are sin.

I suspect that was a backstory that would have eventually been told if the series had lasted long enough. I always had the feeling that she was on the run in some way, but based on pretty much nothing.

She says "I loved this ship the moment I saw it", probably why Mal loves her.

I've always thought it was related to the fact of her dying.. If she was always on the run or go if you will.. There would be a smaller chance for attachment to a place or people (aside from the crew.. But I don't think she believed that would even happen) and at one point her illness would catch up to her and that would be that. IMO
