I was wondering, i saw previews of this, and it sounded like a modern day version of name of the rose, starring sean connery, christian slater and f. murray abraham, which was about the murders and deceitful acts of monks in the middle ages. Now, i know a lot of people liked that film, but to be honest i absolutely hated it. I was thinking about seeing this, because i like Heath Ledger in a few movies, but the first thing i thought was "oh man, it's name of the rose all over again?" Can anybody give me some info?

It does share a similarity. Although, The Name of the Rose was genuinely gruesome. The Order is one of the worst movies I've seen in the last 5 years.

No, the movies aren't alike other than they both have to do with Catholicism in a broad sense. The Order has supernatural forces, demons, etc, while The Name Of The Rose has only men, priests, inquisitors, monks, etc things of this world. The Name Of The Rose deals with a murder mystery, the Inquisition, heresy, the politics of the Church in those centuries, while The Order involves itself specifically with a Sin Eater, the process of entering heaven, the choice of becoming a Sin Eater. Actually now that I think about it, the main characters in both movies are tempted to leave their priesthood for a woman, but it's of two entirely different circumstances.

Nope, apart from the fact they both feature the catholic church, both are great movies though. Please ignore the naysayers bashing this movie just because there aren't enough explosions and you have to think a little.
If you liked Name of the Rose I recommend you also check the book out.

No more than Star Wars is like Star Trek. They are both in space or in these films based around religious context, but other than that, others have done well in describing "The Name of the Rose" to be a pure murder-mystery having to do with the will of men. "The Order" on the other hand, is religious in nature, supernatural in theme. It has received low reviews often but I watched it with open, fresh eyes and I enjoyed it. If you liked movies like Depp's film The Ninth Gate, you should like this. I do not consider this a horror film. It is a thriller with supernatural events, but there is more emotion behind it all. Good viewing!
