It may be that Diaz got a bigger fee whereas Barrymore got a fee plus a percentage of the film's earnings. In the long term, Drew'd be better off.

Barrymore's company Flower Films made the movie. So she gets her salary as a lead, she gets paid as a producer and she gets a percentage of the money made at the box office and with rentals. Diaz only gets her 14 million. Barrymore pulled in more for this movie with all those factors considered.

Even by 2003 Cameron was a bigger star than Drew. Cameron was headlining big blockbusters while Drew was mostly playing supporting roles.
