    http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/young-woman-raises-150k-homeless-veteran-spent-20/story?id=51343911
A young woman has raised over $160,000 for a homeless man she said spent his last $20 to buy her gas after she became stranded on a major interstate.
On a fundraising page she has since set up for the man, Kate McClure, 27, wrote that she pulled off an exit ramp on I-95 near Philadelphia late one night when she realized her car was running out of gas.
A homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt, 34, spotted her vehicle and approached to offer her assistance, she said.
"Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign. He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong," McClure wrote. "He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can."
Bobbitt, who McClure said she later learned is a Marine Corps veteran and a former firefighter, had used his last $20 to buy her gas. Wanting to repay him for his kindness, McClure started a GoFundMe page to share the story and raise funds for Bobbitt.
In addition to bringing him essentials to stay warm and repaying him for the gas, McClure's page has raised more than $160,000 in donations, far more than her $10,000 goal. McClure wrote that she would like to use the funds to help him with rent an apartment, get a reliable vehicle and cover four to six months worth of expenses.

Something about this bothers me. The man did what decent people do, help a person in distress.
Sorry, he should not be paid $160,000 for an act which all of us should be willing to do. A panhandler can make more than 20 bucks in a few hours.
The $160,000 would have best gone to some homeless charity, so many could benefit, not just one lucky man who helped the right person.

If you click onto the gofundme link at the top of my op, you can see it's over $220,000 dollars, and counting. The abcnews link will bring you to their televised report where you can see that, starting when it was way less than the running total is now, the man, Bobbitt, declared his intentions to pay it forward himself, and share the money with other homeless people, not to mention the guys who he has looked out for so far:
"One day I stopped to see him and had a few things in a bag to give him, one of which was a box of cereal bars so he could have something that he could carry around and eat. He was very appreciative as usual and the first thing he said was “do you want one?”
Another time I dropped off 2 wawa gift cards and a case of water.. the first words that came out of his mouth were “I can’t wait to show the guys” (there are 2 others he hangs out with and they all take care of each other).
If just those 2 statements alone do not give you a glimpse of the good heart this man has I’m not sure anything will."

Okay, fair enough. He sounds like a good man who will help others. I still don't think he should get an apartment though.

I think he needs a roof over his head and if people are willing to help him then that's great

I work at a place where all the smokers must congregate on one patio. It overlooks a freeway onramp and we watch the panhandlers position themselves there every day. Kind motorists hand out 20's to them constantly.
Those fools are homeless because they wannabe. They love that freedom and something inside me thinks that lifestyle has its benefits - namely utter freedom. I really don't think the guy wants a roof over his head.

Dollars to donuts he has past indecent exposure or even full blown sexual assault charges that the media will dredge up. Happens every time.
