Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Manderlay

    ccr152 — 16 years ago(April 26, 2009 05:44 PM)

give me a quick chance to explain what i meant by "watchable" i thought dogville was very, very good and one of the most effective films i've ever watched. dancer in the dark is one of my favorite films. but in both cases, i would be alright if i never saw them again. you know what i mean?
my question is, is manderlay ANY easier to watch? i should make it clear that it wasn't the sparse sets or camera style or any of the dogme elements that bothered me, it was that both aforementioned films (especially dogville) beep with me for DAYS afterward and i'm aware that was (probably) the point, but i just heard this movie was out and i'm not in the mood for another dogville at the moment.
if an episode of "barney" is 1, and an all-inclusive documentary filmed in auschwitz during the holocaust is 10, please give me a rating, without giving too much away. thanks!

Hmm, well I really liked Manderlay but it's pretty much 'more of the same' after Dogville. It's probably sharper and nastier in some ways too! I think it's really worth saying but on the basis of what you've said I think you're probably going to want to leave this for some day in the future

The style and atmosphere of this film is not nearly as good as in Dogville, but the message is just as strong and the scenario follows a somewhat similar path. I found both Dogville and Manderlay easy to watch in spite of their length, however it takes some amount of experience in life to truely appreciate these films to the fullest.
If you're a liberal and you think of yourself as destined to make this world a better place, watch this film only if you are ready to see your naive ideology smashed. If the message of Dogville bothered you, Manderlay is probably going to do the same for you 😉

I would have to say that there was an attempt to smash ideology. Whether or not that attempt succeeds is ultimately up to the viewer. As for whether or not the ideology is "naive," well, that's just your own value judgment and is pretty much indefensible.

Other than Bryce Dallas Howard's nudity, a resounding NO.
