Restaurant workers have very good memories, and those who don't tip are liable to receive nasty payback. So I always tip very well, particularly at establishments where I am likely to return.

We have a guy who comes in with his two kids, one kid is allergic to half the menu and the other kid is allergic to the other half. He's picky, rude, whines about the cleanliness of the restaurant not meeting his standard, is disgusted and impatient whenever a friendly employee speaks to him, and usually ends up sending his food back. Plus, he takes about ten minutes to order, demands special treatment because unfortunately he's a regular, and he never tips. He usually spends $40-60 depending on whoever he takes to dinner, and never ever ever tips. He acts like he hates us and our food, but he's back every Thursday night, Friday afternoon, Sunday night and whatever other day he just feels like showing up.
It's like the guy is asking us to tamper with his food. We remember him, we loathe him, we've never done anything to his food bc we're not animals, but still. We'd LOVE to.

Absolutely right on the money. I almost can't believe there's such an abundance of proud cheap-asses in this country (USA)! Pretty alarming & what an utterly embarrassing indictment of society today.
Husband & I eat out regularly and RARELY (like maybe 5 times in 15 years) have we met up with deplorable, substandard service. Furthermore, in those instancesmore times than notit's OFTEN due to wait staff being overburdened. You can look around to see them having too many tables to handle, typically as they RUN around with trays of food! So in that situation, they still warrant our 20% (& it's 25% if svc. is exemplary! Many are students working their way through school, an admirable trait NON-Tippers should consider). However, if I have time I will act on my newly found insight & WILL let establishment (owner or manager) know later they need MORE servers, which I gotta believe they've heard many times over!
Of course, typically I will act most often when it IS an establishment where I not only enjoy the food but want to frequent again. And true, it also works to my own vested interest as well as theirs. Service IS important of course & part of the dining experience.
And the obvious fact is the restaurant business IS competitive & would prefer KNOWING than to lose out on regular customers who stay silent but never return.
Again, can't help returning strictly to the
        wait staff
conversation and tipping because honestly I'm appalled by another thread at the VAST number posting, even bragging, about stiffing waiters! So to them I say: without exception, YOU are a piece of
        garbage
, a total selfish mole who should NOT venture out of your house (or cave).
When I was a POOR college student, take-out was MY luxury of the week. If that!
And so I'm clear here too.this is coming from someone who never ONCE worked in the restaurant business. I do eat out & observe what the job entails & often it's a lot. If you are good at your work, particularly the fine dining venues.
Additionally, if I believe they do not have enough persons manning their restaurant & service suffers due to that sometimes I will even (if comfortable with server, no surprise.I often am) casually/amusingly advise them upon departure "Wow, they got you guys hopping.tell them you need more HELP" as I leave them their respectable tip.
And regarding the BAD service out there (and yes, I'm no different than all of society. I have encountered those rare exceptions where ones wait staff is out for a smoke or whatever &
        NEVER there
.don't even get menus or water)I often just up & LEAVE before anything is ordered so as to NOT stress out myself or company I am in. To me, sending a message of deliberately POOR service is 10%. Proud to say I don't think I've ever had to reduce myself to this but maybe TWICE in my life.
We live in the richest country in the world & yet often appear to have the worst set of values/manners & thoughtfulness toward others! I totally understand everyone is NOT rich (nor am I) but for the love of god, don't EAT OUT at
        service
restaurant if you can't afford it!!! How hard is that to follow?? Do you hop on a train, bus or taxi unable to pay the correct amt.?
        If so, what happens next?
So now I am completely of the mindset & favor that the restaurants legislate this! Why should Iand many decent members of society be paying for others (the
        refuse
the noun!) that REFUSE to tip?
Better to have it equal for everyone & pay for the service due! And THAT way, if you have an issue, USE YOUR WORDS to express that to those in charge. Which hey.from my reading seems about 95% groundless, you are just
        CHEAP
(and also I suspect, don't have full command of your language to EXPRESS yourself precisely so who knows, maybe your ONLY form of payback, your
        shot
at a higher functioning world you aren't part of).
Boy am I glad NOW I never once had to work at restaurants but just be on the OTHER side of this equation.

I'm not a "non-tipper", but this open letter contains just as much entitlement as the writer claims non-tippers have.
Tipping is an acknowledgement of the quality of service received, not a mandatory compensation because your wages suck.

Don't like non tippers? Get a better beep job that doesn't rely almost solely on me having to pay you extra regardless of whether or not you deserve it. I work construction. You know how many times I've been cleaned up getting ready to pack it in only to be told we aren't leaving for another couple hours? How many times some dick white hat fresh out of his supervisor course picks out work apart because he thinks he knows anything about actually working in the industry? Do I go around and sabotage the job we're doing for the guy paying for it all? No because that's ridiculous.
If the service and the food is good then yeah , you'll get a sizeable tip. If my bill is $25 more times than not I'm giving you $40 and not bothering to get change. But how beep arrogant of you to call anyone out or judge anyone because you think you're entitled to anything extra just for doing your job. I do residential service work. I don't get a beep tip and I don't expect one. Because I chose to go and get a job I could support myself on without the complete expectance that others provide extra.
The real problem is the fact that the food industry doesn't provide a more livable wage to its employees that doesn't require total generosity of the public.

                to quote home alone;
johnny: "keep the change ya filthy animal!"
                pizza guy: "cheapskate!"
20cent tip, million dollar house, mind you kevin mccallister was only 8 but he learned fast with the bellhop in the second movie.
to the last guy; its like saying your against bonuses; you do a better job for someone and they hand you a bonus for your hard work and effort; all of a sudden the next day you work harder for that person, same concept. if you think people dont remember, they do.
i can tell you every address of every person that i ever delivered a pizza to and tell you what they tipped me. now, when i get 2 orders up of 2 previous customers and the first guy that placed the order gave me beep last time and the second person to order gave me reasonable gratuity for my effort, my time, my gas my oil changeswho do you think will get their order first? thats how it goes.
dont be a jerk to someone over the phone either when theyre taking your order, ive seen that first hand, not pretty!
dont beep with people that handle your food.

Seriously? Oil changes? 1 every 10,000Km? This post is stupid. If I sit down to eat at restaurant and the server does their job, they get paid. If they go over and beyond, I'll give them a tip. But tipping them just cause, not happening.

That's hardly the point though. Of course I tip, but just because I don't want to be the beep who doesn't. But it's not fair. It's not I who should be paying for the waiter's salary. That's just stupid. I'm served in many areas of life. When I go to the convenience store, should I tip the clerk? People don't tip when they go to McDonald's. Why should you tip the hairdresser and the taxi driver for basically doing their job? I do my job everyday for other people and nobody's tipping me. The tipping culture is just stupid but now that the machine has started, it's not very possible to take it down.

You don't tip the clerk at the store because he is getting paid minimum wage (or more). Your server's salary is 2-3 dollars an hour. If your server was getting minimum wage your $10 dollar meal is now $14.50. Instead of that though, we tip, and this way you can tip based on the service. Servers will work harder and be kinder to you knowing that their service will reflect on the amount of money they will be making. Tipping gives we (the customer) better service in general. You shouldn't only tip if service is exceptional, tip 15% if service is decent.
Only once in my life have I not tipped, and thats because it was the worst service I have ever had, nobody else has even come close. I was a regular at a diner for a year after college, and as a good tipper, the staff always treated me great. Always quick to give me a fresh cup of coffee.
Why should you tip the hairdresser and the taxi driver for basically doing their job? I do my job everyday for other people and nobody's tipping me.
Nobody's tipping you because you get paid an actual salary. Again, these people need your tips or they will not be working there too long. You might say "well good they can go get a real job" like the hotshot construction worker up there. Well somebody has to do these jobs, and if none of them are getting tipped eventually machines will be doing all these jobs, or like I said earlier, you will be paying alot more for these simple services. Tipping 15%(at least) is really not that much to ask. If you can't afford to tip, you really can't afford to go out to eat, order pizza, take a cab, or any other of these services we take for granted.

An open letter to an entitled server:
Boo freaking hoo. Cry me a river. No one put a gun to your head forcing you to be a server. No one. You chose that line of work. I work in a field where I put my life on the line every day and have a real possibility of not going home after my shift and not only do I not get so much as a thank you, nimrods like you and that idiot publication you put your letter in spend every day vilifying people like me but you don't hear me whining about it. Grow a set and do your job or find another line of work. Also, I took my 3 year old to a pizza place one and all she wanted was a slice of pizza. It took our server 20 minutes to bring us 1 slice of cheese pizza so tell me, what the hell am I tipping them for?
