Calamity Jane kind of ruins the series

I just started this show because everyone keeps telling me how great it is. I'm on episode 5 and I love it but Jesus I want to punch the screen every time Calamity Jane speaks, her voice and acting is almost ruining this show for me.

I always preferred "Well, the deputy deputized by the deputy sheriff tells you to SHUT THE beep UP"
She has so many good lines and rants but I feel like a lot of people overlook them because they don't like her character much. -

I could not stand Calamity Jane. Every time she came on screen, I was like "Oh God."
Horrible character. Why? Basically she was an annoying drunk. Nobody likes hanging around with an annoying drunk. Real? Maybe. But just because something is real doesn't mean I have to like it. -

Watching for first time on Amazong Prime, was really hoping Clammy Jane exited the serie at the end of season 1 aftar Wild Bill murder.
Same here. I wanted to skip through her scenes. Her and the preacher were tied for the most insufferable characters of season 1.
I found Jane less annoying in seasons 2 & 3. I don't know if the actress toned it down or if I just got more used to her. Cy Tolliver was the most hated character for me so that may have made Jane more bearable. Nothing against Powers Booth though. He was good.
I wonder if the over-the-top portrayal of Jane was intentional because the character was really afraid and not nearly as tough as she pretended to be. I don't think the actress was bad.

Granted I sort of disliked her but the scene in S2 EP1 when the carriage rides by while she is passed out on the horse, wakes up, says, beep then passes back out is hilarious.

I found Steve the drunk far more annoying and cartoonish.
It really seemed like the actor was wellacting if you know what I mean. His portrayal didn't seem natural to me, mostly when he was going on one of his tirades. I've seen this actor in two other shows (Weeds & Orange is the New Black) and he was really good. Not so much in Deadwood though.

I think for me, the way she speaks just seemed so fake and forced and it takes me out of the moment, like I can see the actress struggling and it all comes out marble mouthed. You can sound drunk, or scared or belligerent or shy or any combination of those things w/o that much affect and strain. Even allowing for her trying to seem more "masculine" or "strong" or not wanting to sound girly, one can lower the pitch of their voice w/o that much strain.
That said, I did end up liking her more by the end. At first she seemed quite cartoonish, and that lasted longer than I anticipated, but she did get fleshed out more. I did like her relationship with Joanie, who I also ended up liking quite a bit. -

The only truly cartoonish character was Steve the Drunk. As a previous poster said, he was the most annoying character. He actually makes Calamity Jane's character seem reasonable by comparison.

I'm not saying that she isn't historically accurate or doesn't perform her acting well, but through the first 9 episodes (which is how far I've gotten thus far), I have no trouble in putting her near the top of my list of most annoying/despised characters in the history of great shows.
Joffrey from GoT is most despised, but that's a positive review of his work, while I cringed every time Calamity Jane would be on screen. -

I just got into this show. I have to agree. The character is cringeworthy, and annoying. I guess I got more used to her about halfway through season 2, but her voice and buffoonery made me give Deadwood a 9 rating instead of a 10. Otherwise, I love this show.

She had no character arc, imho I think that's what hurts the portrayal for the most part but for me I found her entertaining at least. Her counterpart, Charlie Utter though got on my nerves. I don't know why but he seemed to be a bigger Bitch than Jane ever was
