Why was this not released in the USA?

IMDb says that this movie was only released in Brazil and made less than one million dollars - it broke even. Am I seeing that right? Can't believe that the caliber of actors in this movie made less than that!
How come I"ve never heard of this movie or seen it until it was on satellite one night? Great movie - at least play it on the Hallmark Channel! Reford looked great for his age. JLow was very good in acting and looked very young and pretty. Freeman was his usual self - great! All in all - enjoyable.

In particular, I'd think it would be shown once in a while on the Sundance Channel. I mean, RR does "present" movies there so I assume he gets a say in what's shown even if not absolute control.

Not just actors, but I just noticed the director was Lasse Hallstrm, another big name.

I suspect the box office results on IMDB are rarely accurate and I wonder if the professional version has more detail. According to box office mojo it made one million on it's first weekend with a limited release and then went on to earn 18 million. With a production budget of 30 millon I guess that's a 12 million loss? But who knows by the time the accounts have finished and it is probably still earning money.
