Well, another way to look at it would be, that Chris desperately wanted to get caught! Just like Nola's ghost(his conscience) says. To which he responds saying, "at least there'll be some small measure of hope for the possibility of meaning". And eventually being denied that and having to live with a guilty conscience, signifies his biggest loss!

The ring thing is just another proof of Allen's brilliant capability to surprise his audience, basically, we expect him to get caught because the 'ring' goes to the wrong side, and this is precisely what saves him. No one could see it coming, and that's why it's one hell of a twist ending.

The analogy is that of reality. Injustice always gets away with things in our world. In order to build a better world, justice must be done. For the sake of Chris and the ring. He got lucky. The police found the ring in the hands of another man who picked it up.
