              if there is an employment contract, resignation and termination may have different legal significance, contracts sometimes list reasons that have to be given for termination

                    Basically it means I'm giving you a choice you can resign or you can be terminated.
                    Depending on the circumstances, a resignation may also mean that you are entitled to benefits and privileges still. Firing, that's usually not the case.
