I think that shaving her head was an extremely stupid thing to do and certainly not necessary for the movie plot.
I'm going to have to disagree with this. Shaving someone's head (against their will) has been a method if psychological torture for centuries, especially for women. -

Agreed. As far as I can tell it, shaving someone's head against their will takes their own right to identity out of their hands, and into the hands of their captor. It can make them feel as if they're no longer an individual.
Legally speaking, at least in the U.S., shaving someone's head without their consent is considered assault and is a crime.
