How I Met Your Mother vs Friends

Friends sucked. It wasn't realistic at all (neither is HIMYM in many ways) but it painted new York as this homogenous clean place, none of them had real jobs that could afford them the places they lived in, they were barely funny. It was ridiculous.
On HIMYM, They had viable careers, and they still acted realistically poor with the exception of barney. Marshall, a lawyer, Ted an architect, Lily a teacher, Robin a journalist.
I think Friends would not appeal to all audiences whereas, HIMYM had stories that anyone could relate to regardless of background. In other words, friends was too "white".
That being said, I enjoyed it for what it was, but it doesn't even compare to the funniness of HIMYM. I usually watched it when nothing else was on.

I honestly don't think there is a right answer to which is better. I completely understand how the two shows are going to always be compared to each other and no matter how much fans enjoy it or hate it, that comparison is never going to go away.
In terms of a pure enjoyment/watch factor HIMYM caught on with me better than Friends ever did. I can watch isolated episodes of Friends and not feel like I wasted my time or anything. But, I have to be honest I stumbled across HIMYM and it hooked me instantly. I watched it each day that it was on that week and by the weekend I had ran out to Target or wherever and bought the first 2 seasons on DVD. I blew through the DVDs in days and then got the third season and blew through that one just in time to start watching season 4 live.
I personally connected with HIMYM more than Friends so it will always have a place in my mind. I never connected with Friends, but I won't say it's better or worse than HIMYM. -

Friends is a lot better. There are times HIMYM seems to lag like it's just trying to drag out revealing who the mother really is. I stopped watching it for awhile when it originally aired then caught back up later. I never got bored with Friends and watched it all the way through when it aired.

How I Met Your Mother blows Friends away. The characters are more relateable, and likeable for that matter. Also, thanks to the writers, the banter between the HIMYM cast is wayyyyy more realistic then anything the Friends gang came up with.

I used to think Friends was good until I started watching HIMYM. The only character on Friends that I can ever stand is Chandler and he starts to grate on my nerves pretty fast. Even when characters on HIMYM are acting like beep I still love them because they always redeem themselves. The stories are better, the acting is better, the music is infinitely better and I say this as someone who was forced to listen to the music used on Friends as it came out in real time and hated it then too. Ted and Robin, even at its most ridiculous felt real, Ross and Rachel was such crap, mostly because they always treated the other like crap. Plus, coffee shop? Seriously? The only time my friends and I were in a coffee shop in our 20s was to 1) get coffee and leave or 2) It was open 24 hours and we were cramming for a final.
