I agree, somewhat. That it seemed inevitable that Ted would end up with Robin.
They did it in the most ridiculous way ever. The last season should have and could have easily been 2 episodes; the wedding, and then the aftermath. Maybe if they spent just a couple of episodes on the wedding and then went into the Mother so we feel like they've been together for sometime.
Instead we've been waiting for Ted to meet her and then when he does, she dies the same episode.
Poorly executed. And having said that I'm angry again. -

Always seemed like the show would end up with Ted and Robin together - and for me, that was pretty much confirmed in the episode where Robin found out she couldn't have kids. It seemed to be a very obvious writer's ploy to throw off the average viewer, who would now be like "oh, she can't have kids! There's no way he ends up with her seeing as he has kids!".
I was actually one of the people that thought of the mother-died theory (in parallel - I actually only first saw the show in about 2012, and I'd be surprised if no-one had considered it before then), and felt like I'd won a bet when I was proven right.
Pretty much everyone I've spoken to that liked the show hated the finale, and it pretty much seemed forced to try and stick to the original plotline of Ted and Robin ending up together. A better show would have adapted to how the show had changed from season 1 and 2; instead they tried to fit a square peg in a hole that was by now very, very circle. -

Didn't they specifically say that they were Not supposed to be the Ross and Rachel? I was thinking that in commentary they said that. In fact I was thinking that the commentary for the ending of the first episode said they did that "that's how I met your aunt Robin" to indicate that the show was different and that they were not your "Ross and Rachel".

What are you asking? Yes instead of doing something different from friends, the writers chose to copy the Ross/Rachel formula down to the unjustified reunion. And what do you mean was Aunt Robin always Aunt Robin? Well she wasn't called Aunt Robin before Ted had the kids.

As a die hard, love this show fan, I can honestly say at first, the ending pissed me off. Re-watching the whole series from beginning to end on Netflix, I've had a chance to watch the finale a few times now. In that time, I've come to appreciate it more and more, and I'm at peace with how the series ended. I've even warmed up to The Mother, even though I thought she was miscast at first. I still wish, in my heart of hearts, that Ted wound up with Victoria, who was my personal favorite GF of his. But, I love the show and watch it whenever I can.
