Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — High-Rise

    Xasablanc — 9 years ago(August 12, 2016 12:34 PM)

I almost didn't watch it because of the rather low rating on IMDb and the comments on the forum. I'm so glad that I did because it was such a treat. I enjoyed it very much. The movie is atmospheric, The score is just lovely. The characters believable, fully developed and you actually do care for them. No shots wasted; it felt full and rounded. There are more elements of surrealism than "social-realism", so forget about intellectualizing it and just go with the ride.
One criterion for a good movie is how much it engages you emotionally. High-Rise does that because you feel for the characters, (despite all the absurdity). It scores high on that. High-Rise is not really about socio-economics or politics but the characters. It doesn't try to be clever. It IS clever. The level of writing/film-making is high.
It's classified as "drama" but it's more of a "drama-comedy".
Notice that more than 60% of voters have rated it as 6 or above but the IMDb rating is ONLY 5,8. So, don't get fooled by that, as I almost did. I'm glad I watched it. It's one of those movies that stays with you.
True Self is righteous. It's a conspiracy to portray Man as a savage that needs taming and policing

Agreed. Worst case scenario you discover ABBA's SOS played by an orchestra

            Nice rebuttal. Very thought provoking.

i loved it. sometimes art is not made simply to be cheaply enjoyed, but to be evocative, ugly, and disturbing. if people are expecting cheap cookie cutter entertainment that is spelled out for you like everything else on the market nowadays, no wonder they will act like it was trash. it was truly a work of art that can't be discredited for being what it is. it was a very facinating trip.
Do you think you are alive because you can fight?

Couldn't agree more. However, having read the novel, it's not that the characters are developed, but more so that you can feel their turning into madness and lack of self control. It was a very pleasant surprise. I hadn't watched for so long for the same reasons (reviews).
Also, I can't understand what made the audience leave the theater atthe first screening. I hope it wasn't because of the dog, because I have a dog on my own and I laughed with the beginning.

No way. I hated all of the characters, they are all so selfish and disgusting.
The only individuals I cared about were the animals, and it was horrifying what was being done to them.
All the movie communicated to me was that humans are nasty and a waste for this beautiful planet.

But that is a valid position. I believe humans are a disgusting virus on this planet and if this movie made you feel that than isn't that an achievement?

We'll soon be gone. Trump voters have seen to that.

Just the asshole haters on this one. I thought this film was a deliciously dark and deviant delight.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
