Are we to believe these 2 "end up" together? Or is that too big a leap of faith with the content? Subject to interpretation surely but it feels like they are wanting you to head down that path with your thinking at the conclusion.

I think that they probably did end up together. It was pretty obvious that they both had feelings for each other.
And they had great chemistry together.
