I was really excited about it, but did not like it at all.

American here. I liked it, but perhaps not as much as I thought I would due to this film being on 2 separate Top 100 of the 2000-2010 decade lists (Times of London and Metacritic). I likely would have liked it even more if I could have followed the dialogue better (commonly, us Yanks don't get everything due to unfamiliar accents and jargon ALSO my library copy sucked). Also, as written by one English reviewer, the film likely resonantes most with English. Many commonalities with other countries, cultures, etc. But the reviewer noted it was a period he'd just as likely forget (rough times and attitudes in England). So kind of a Stand by Me for English (please pardon the comparison), but with a darker side. Sure- Brits, Germans and Chinese may get and enjoy Stand by Me, but it resonates deepest in those who lived in the culture and times. That' all.
