His frustration at him for slacking on the class was justified for sure, but bringing up his dead father out of nowhere? Who the hell does that? Seemed so bizarre and a bit unrealistic, but I guess the movie did need a conflict to start with.

Especially in the middle of class. Yeah, he didn't so the assignment, but if you want to talk about it with him, shouldn't you wait until after class to do so?

Exactly. My best guess is that it was just bad writing. I mean, by all means, fail the student. But what teacher would be so pompous to bring up something as inappropriate and irrelevant as a kid's father's death?

Completely agree. Very inappropriate thing to say. I can understand calling him out for not doing the assignment but to make such a deal out of it in the middle of class was unnecessary.
Be thankful for every new day!

Exactly what I have been wondering. I get so pissed off when I watch that part. I have a son and if any teacher ever does something so stupid to him, all Hell will break loose. I get so mad that the mom doesn't say beep about it in court. I know its just a movie but damn!

I agree with what you said, but during the court scene the judge said "Losing a parent isn't easy, which is why I'm sentencing you to three months house arrest." It's quite possible that his mom mentioned the motive for the assault to the judge, but it wasn't mentioned in the court scene in the film. But as disrespectful as the teacher was for bringing up Kale's deceased father into the conversation about failing to do the assignment, Kale was very wrong to assault him.

Douchebags and a-holes, haven't you met or heard of them? If not, youtube is full of d-bag "friends", teachers and even few lawyers.
I had personal experience with them, in 8th grade I broke my leg and classmates stole my sticks. I didn't have a phone, so I was in the same place until 3AM, when security guy finaly checked the building. As if not enough, one teacher joked about it whenever possible and not.
Maybe not the dead father, but same teacher brought up messy divorce of parrents to one unlucky student in similar way as showed in the movie.

I don't think its bad writing or unrealistic. Some teachers are bullies.

I would have punched that douche in the face, too.

I dunno. There's not much exposition so we don't know what the relationship is between the teacher and Kale or if he knew his dad. The kid was obviously a beep up and sometimes a little shaming goes a long way in motivating people to re-examine themselves. It wasn't the most sensitive thing to say but then again Kale wasn't the most ideal student. I found Kale to be not a completely likable character, bringing a lot of trouble on himself, from the death of his dad on through his second violation.

Not that I'm on the teachers side, but I think he realizes that he slipped up when kale gave him that what did U say look.

Yes, it was one thing to be frustrated with him for not doing his assignment. The appropriate thing to do would be to ask him to see him after class. And speak only about that. That was justified. But him mentioning his father at all was not justified. I understand they had to have a reason to substantiate Kale's house arrest, but couldn't they have made it where at least we feel Kale deserved it? And later when he exposes the killer, it's his redemption.
