Danica Scott, having been witness to the hit and run incident where Jeff's 8 year old son was killed as she was driving by, decided to carry on driving and never came forward and testified against the driver that run over and killed Jeff's son. This of course catches up to her 3 years later, as she is then subjected to one of jigsaws traps which she has no control over. She wakes up in a freezing cold meat-locker, her wrists are chained to the ceiling, she's been stripped completely naked, there's hoses positioned either side of her which are soon to be spraying her with ice cold water which will solidify into ice and oh hey, in the room with her is the same man who she ****ed over 3 years previously. So she's facing dying a horrifically painful death and is relying on the very man who she didn't lift a finger to help years ago to save her life.
Considering what she did, was this a fair deal?
The case for it being justified I suppose would be the callousness of her actions (or inaction rather). An 8 year old boy, a literal child, gets run over and subsequently dies as a result and you decide to just…do nothing? Go about your day as if nothing happened? Where could you have been on your way to that was so important that you continue going about your day having witnessed a child get hit by a car, or did you just not care? When we see the flashback with stills of the accident when Danica is driving past looking at the scene of the crime, her facial expression doesn't exactly say "holy **** a child just got run over", she looks emotionless, as if she's just seen a billboard advert that vaguely caught her attention for a fleeting moment. She's even playing with her nails in that shot. Totally apathetic. We're not given much context to Danica's personality and character traits so we don't know her story, but regardless of who has just been run over in front of you you stop what you're doing and you help in whatever way you can. To leave anyone for dead like that, never mind a child, is an unbelievably cold and ****ty thing to do. Then during her torture after the first shower she gets hit with, she may well have just been panicking and not thinking straight, but having the nerve to then say to Jeff "I didn't do anything to you" and "I'm ****ing dying", really Danica? It's just been explained why you've been put in this predicament and you come out with that? Jigsaw called Danica "self absorbed" in her tape, and if that reaction is anything to go by he's got that pretty spot on about her.
…but.
We don't know what Danica's story is, and it's pretty clear that she's a very flawed person, but there's something about Danica and her specific trap where I can't help but feel for her. She could just buy uncaring, but it's a possibility that she had anxiety issues, that in the shock of seeing what just happened she froze (so to speak). She did a ****ty thing, but being slowly frozen to death in a meat-locker is one of the most painful ways a person could die. That in itself is a horrific way to go, but the thing that really makes me feel sorry for her; she's naked. It's not just how painful her torture is, it's the humiliation aspect as well. Imagine waking up in a freezing cold room, realising that you're naked, there's a strange man in front of you (who as it happens hates your guts) and your arms are raised to the ceiling chained up for you can't cover up your body. By stripping her nude they removed not only her protection against the hoses, but her dignity and her humanity. Being hung up like that in a meat locker whilst naked, she's effectively been reduced to a piece of meat that can talk. She had to remind Jeff that she's a human being, and that's what sold it for me. As ****ty as what she did was, I personally don't believe she deserved that. Hard to say what id have done if I was in Jeff's shoes, but in reality I'd think that regardless of what she'd done, I couldn't just stand and watch a human woman be subjected to that. I'd like to think that I wouldn't have hesitated to help her.
Anyway essay over lol, what do you think though? If you were in Jeff's position in this scenario, what do you do?
