Originally, Amanda kills Matthews by stabbing him in the neck. Her near death experience with him is what caused her to turn into a serial killer.
I wish they had stuck to this instead of using Matthews as a sequel bait to give a lame death in Part IV.

I agree with you on this. If they didn't use him as bait, it would've meant that there is at least one Jigsaw survivor,
apart from Dr. Gordon
. His death at the end of 4 was entirely meaningless. A beep ending to a beep movie.

This. I really did hate that death scene at the end of Part IV but it wrapped his story up, I guess.

There are three versions of the movie. The theatrical cut, unrated, and the directors cut. I'm pretty sure he died in the theatrical cut.
