He wanted her to divorce Jeff. Their marriage was in the way of the affair.
But it was intended for the viewer to think he and Lynn were husband and wife.

It's not like it's 100% clear. I had assumed that Jeff and her had gotten a divorce and the other guy was her new husband but that she still missed her ex Jeff and that's why he was referred to as "the husband." Idk I thought that made more sense in context since we never saw her with her daughter and saw her with the new guy multiple times.
