It's obvious that when you show clips of NC-17 movies that your movie will end up being NC-17 too.
Instead they should have beeped every curse word and covered every instance of nudity and asked them to rate that movie. Since there is nothing 'offensive' shown or heard then the MPAA have no alternative but to give the movie a PG rating, but of course the real test is whether they're able to resist giving it a higher rating as a form of censorship.
The producers are of course free to release an uncensored version as a NC-17 later
The worst thing about the MPAA ratings is that it's actually simple to objectively rate movies for everything. Count the swear words, count the boobs and dicks, time the simulated sex, count the stabbings and decapitations, count the drug use an NC-17 tells me nothing
The fact that I can take my 9 year old niece to watch Gone Girl but I can't take my 'swears like a trooper' 14 year old nephew to see Lebowski shows how totally retarded the system is.
