Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK

    meemalee — 18 years ago(November 09, 2007 03:05 AM)

Last night, I was lucky enough to go to a screening of this which had an interview and Q & A session with the Director Park Chan-Wook.
This was the film's original ending:
Straight after the rainbow, you cut to a scene of the leads as a very old couple watching TV with their backs to us. They suddenly notice that it's raining and they get their coats on and go outside and climb onto the roof. It pans out and you see that they live in a small house at the top of a mountain surrounded by lots of other little houses.
On their roof is a little tent (a permanent structure) and also a huge antenna. The old couple eat some food (the girl's Rice-Megatron is evidently still working!) and then they hold onto the antenna together and wait
The gist is that they have been living together in the outside world all this time but they never stopped trying to turn the the girl into a nuclear bomb - the "purpose of her existence" - except secretly the boy has been sabotaging every effort (like he did with the cork).
Park then said that he wasn't sure if that was an optimistic ending or a pessimistic ending and that he scrapped it because it was too explanatory anyway

          Cool!
Here's a belated wave to you then,

What did you think of Park? I thought he came across as surprisingly sweet! Of course, I only knew what the translator said since I don't understand Korean but Park's general demeanour seemed quite mild-natured

Yeah, PCW is the man. And suprisingly funny too.
I travelled all the way from Cardiff just to see him (considering it's a pretty rare gem of an occasion), so I was all by myself. I was also too scared to get an autograph (deer in headlights or something around those lines) so I just watched from a distance, as you do.
Well worth it though, and finally I'm home and can finally get some sleep. 🙂

i'm really happy to hear this ending. but still dissapointed it wasn't in the movie. i really did feel the film just kinda died at the end. i would have felt alot happier if i saw it end like this.

I agree, the ending he went with is the best one. The notion that for the rest of her life she tried to kill herself is not a good one.

She was only "trying to kill herself" when there was an electrical storm, and even then she wasn't exactly suicidal in the traditional sense. We all have our quirks, phobias, etc. and I think it's beautifully optimistic that you can find a lifetime partner despite a rather extreme delusion. Definately worthy of a rainbow.

Having just watched this Gem 2 weeks ago, I must say i liked the original ending much better since it gives some closure to the couples mental state and being able to "function" in society. Yet I loved the current ending just as well.
Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead
