I dunno about over there but once those shows are over here in the US, the winning acts are totally forgotten about the very next second when it is over.
I am just tired of the judges here acting as if every single act they like is going to be bigger than The Stones, Elvis, and The Beatles combined.
They act like that to keep us watching even if they don't mean it and they know the act will be forgotten about.
Susan Boyale(?) was on BGT and the only household name that I know of from over there.
Was there anyone else?
Have you ever heard of any American acts from AGT?
I think or IMO Susan was the biggest star of both shows from across the pond. -

What would really be ironic if one of them was captured singing in the shower but really sucked on stage!

Yeah, I guess that is the footage in their private life we see in their intros when they show them walking around on a sidewalk in their hometown as they give us their backstory.
And I agree that it is a lot more phony than it looks or what we see is what we do not get.
And I am aware that producers handpick some acts that they saw, like off of YT, where they are first in line of all those other ones who show up cold only to not pass the screening and be able to go on stage.
I think they let some acts who are really bad just to keep it interesting so we do not get bored with seeing everyone go through all the time.
They also cover up the truth of the million dollar prize money.
Here is the reality (Ha!) of that.
(Last year's winner) Leake's prize for winning AGT is $1 million and a headline slot in a Vegas show. However, this prize is not quite as it seems. As the disclaimer at the end of AGT episodes reads, "The prize, which totals $1,000,000, is payable in a financial annuity over forty years, or the contestant may choose to receive the present cash value of such annuity."
In effect, this means that the $1 million is paid at a rate of $25,000 a year over 40 years – meaning that Leake will be 67 before he gets his whole monetary prize. Alternatively, he can choose to take a lump sum of cash now, which according to Forbes is about $300,000 before taxes.

I suppose one could live off the 25K a year but they will not be able to get that mansion or even any house depending on the cost of living where they are.
They might have to live very frugally if they want to only live on that between payments.
Making very wise investments is another way to stretch those dollars.
One of them got a huge Vegas contract to perform where he is set for life but that is very, very rare.
In any case they do not get what the show claims they will. -

I've read that before about the cash sum being a lot lower. You'd think after all these years, the grand prize would've gone up to at least two million. They pay the judges a lot of money, so they have enough money to give a bigger prize to the winner.
I was going to mention this too, but it's mentioned in the article - they make it sound like the winner will get their own show in Vegas, when the "show in Vegas" really refers to a a few performances where the top 10 contestants perform and the winner is the headlining act. -

Yeah, I'm sure that NBC that makes millions can afford a bigger prize or to at least give them the mil all at once.
And it is probably one of those smaller casinos off the strip on a bare plywood stage that has cracked front windows fixed with duct tape and penny slots and old ladies betting a nickel at a time at blackjack on a formica tiled floor.
I kid but you know.
I dunno where past winners performed but it looks like future winners, as well as other acts, are scheduled to perform at The Luxor starting in Nov.

Exactly. Whatever the amount of the prize would be in order for the winner to literally receive a million dollars in a lump sum, that amount should be the actual prize.
Remember the "chicken catcher," Kevin Skinner?
After his AGT win in 2009, he released his album, Long Ride, in 2010 which received mostly favorable reviews (via Amazon). But it seems that Skinner faded from the limelight since then. As of this writing, his Facebook page — with his profile pic showing him standing next to country music legend Willie Nelson — hasn't been updated since 2012 (via Facebook).
And in 2014, it was reported that the father of two was missing after he texted his family that he had fallen near his home via (Radar Online). After his family filed a missing person's report, Skinner was found safe but was said to be suffering from depression after the end of his marriage.
Since then, there's not much known of the country singer and AGT winner. Hopefully, Skinner returns to the stage at some point so fans can hear his music once again.
