I also find her irritating. She may have been Michael C. Hall's girlfriend when she auditioned for the part since according to IMDb he divorced his first wife in 2006 and married her in 2008. Coincidentally, I have been going back & forth watching two TV series right now - Dexter & Schitt's Creek. I'm hypnotized by the sister in SC even though she poses and pouts as much as Debra & Rita in Dexter, both of whom I find very cloying. Is it the writing or acting or both? Still it is amazing how one charismatic actor can carry a series like Hall does Dexter (he had a lot more help in Six Feet Under!). PS. check out SC - it's hilarious!

I agree with you. Something in her mannerisms and constant whining bothered me. To each their own.

When I first watched the show, I literally couldn't stand her and her voice. It drives me crazy. It was around season 6 where I thought she really shined and was excellent with the material. I am now rewatching the series. I'm on Season 2 and while Deb can still annoy me with her voice, I don't hate her like before. I actually appreciate her story lines and look forward to them. So I think she grows on you.

I'm almost at the end of season 3 and finally I'm warming up to Carpenter's portrayal of Deb Morgan. I truly could not stand her in seasons 1 and 2 but now either I'm getting used to her or I'm slowly starting to realize she's playing the role exactly right.

I thought Debra was great. It did bother me that her character got so emotionally involved in her cases and spent most of the series jumping from one failed relationship to another, but for me the positive outweighed the negative a good deal, especially as the series went on. She was perfect in season 6just vulnerable enough to seem human, but not so much that it completely compromised her judgment.

I don't dislike the actress, but Debra got on my nerves. She became especially unbearable after she found out Dexter's secret. Always wanting to control and know everything, butting into other people's business, being annoying Couldn't stand her.

Then the actress did her job well. You're not supposed to like Debra. Her character is a royal pain. 🙂

Agreed. Could barely stand her scenes, so painful to watch with the neverending whining, immature, clingy behaviour and excessive swearing - incredulous she could be a police officer with the mentality/emotions of a 12 year old! Annoyed me to no end and ruined an otherwise brilliant show. And I don't think Carpenter's horrible performance can be explained away with "that's just Deb's character", bad acting was definitely in the mix too IMO.

To each his own, indeed. I watched 2 episodes, really wasn't my thing, I posted a simple offhand remark and the response has been unreal. LOL. I couldn't believe the strong reactions on both sides of the issue.
This is a fictional character in a TV series. Some people acted like she was a close family member that I had insulted. There are so many real issues people could be concerned about. Some people, not you, have lost their perspective, if they ever had one. Thanks for not being nasty!

no problem and no reason to be nasty about it 🙂 may I just add.. if you watched only two eps you really didn't get a feel for characters at all so it's hard to judge.. maybe one day when you're bored you'll give it a second chance 🙂

That's not the worst of it. Her character is an out-and-out overambitious narcissist, which is exactly the type of cop that police departments work hard to keep out: people that join the police force not to "protect and serve" but rather fulfill their own manic ego trip. She is immature to the point of absurdity, treats the job as a game and is unable to listen to criticism without throwing a hissy fit or demanding that the other person (usually Dexter) is trying to rain of her parade.
At no point in the show does her character demonstrate any competence or skill as an homicide investigator, and she is ultimately always reliant upon Dexter to give her insight and analysis (which she then takes credit for, which Dexter, being the good brother, encourages) and to correct her mistakes.
That said, Carpenter is a hell of a lot less annoying and gives a far more genuine performance (in my opinion) than Jorja Fox and Marg Helgenberger on CSI, which combined with all the absurdly numerous inaccuracies regarding the role of forensics in law enforcement made it impossible for me to enjoy CSI. I could never get over the CSI personnel actually interrogating suspects and even other investigative functions that are the domain of police detectives not even Dexter is that ridiculously inaccurate in its depiction of procedure and protocol.
